A white room. The curtains covering an ajar window through which fresh air flowed in, with a hint of exhaust fumes. By the smell itself it could be guessed that the place was located somewhere in the city center. In the room itself it was very clean. No trace of dirt on the floor, no dust on furniture, it was obvious that it was cleaned here quite often. The temperature wasn't exceeding twenty-two degrees Celsius. The place appeared to be almost perfectly suited to someone's stay. Only the strong smell of medicine in the air was a flaw of this place. Beep. Beep. Beep. This characteristic high sound was regularly heard. Beep. Beep. Beep. It wasn't stopping. Cardiomonitor? Yes, there were no other options. The sound was too recognizable to be anything else. It was right next to a white bed, the surface of which was about a meter above the ground. A teenage girl was laying on it. A patient of this place. She had dark hair of medium length, reaching a little farther than the shoulders and quite a pale complexion. Her lower part of the face was covered by a mask that was connected with tubes to a respirator. brunette has been lying there for a long time. She didn't know how long. Maybe it was a few days, maybe a week or maybe even a month. Her stay in this place turned out to be very sudden. She just woke up here, not knowing how she even got here.
After a few hours of loneliness and silence, suddenly the door to the room opened, and one of the nurses working in this hospital stood up. Short, black hair covered with a cap, a face not looking older than fifty years old, and a typical outfit.
"What's going on? Who is she? Where even am I? And why do I feel so... weak?"
- How are we today? - she asked politely, slowly approaching the patient.
She didn't answer. The teenager only weakly turned her eyes toward her and looked at her. She seemed familiar to her. Has she ever seen her? She had never been to the hospital before, so could that impression be due to the fact that she had been here longer than she thought?
"I can't speak... Even with my greatest efforts I can make myself only twitch a finger. What happened to me?"
- Oh, did you just hear me? - the woman asked hesitantly, coming closer to the bed - Wow, you finally regained consciousness - she said as soon as she saw that the girl followed her with her eyes - Doctors were already worried that your coma could last up to several years.
"Up to a few years? Wait, I was in a coma? What is that supposed to mean? Why don't I know what's going on around me? How long have I been in this coma? Why have I been in it at all? I was coming back home with my parents and..."
- Well, it was a miracle that you survived such a serious accident and you did not suffer any serious injuries - the nurse sighed with relief, quickly taking a step back - I will quickly inform your doctor to see you as soon as possible.
After these words, the woman quickly left the room. The brunette, however, remained still and closed her eyes for a moment. Everything was clear. It was enough for her to hear that one frightening word. Accident. She already knew what happened. It wasn't difficult to guess.
She was coming back home with her parents, after a long trip to her aunt abroad. The stay there lasted for a week, and the one way trip was about twenty hours. She was sitting in the back seat and both her parents were in the front. It was late, so she was not very focused on what was happening around. She fell asleep, listening to the sound of raindrops hitting the window and the radio program that was trasnsmitted at the time. Suddenly a loud sound woke her from the trance. Truck horn. The last thing she remembered was the dazzling lights and a very strong and painful jolt. Was there a frontal collision?
"In that case... I think I can expect the worst" she sighed internally, feeling her eyes start to get wet "Frontal collision with the truck... There's no way my parents..."
She did not finish the sentence, even though she was talking to herself, inside her own head. She didn't want to finish it, knowing that confirming it, would only cause her uncontrolled crying, which in the state in which she was now, probably would be harmful. So she stared at the ceiling and let single a tear flow down her face and land on the pillow she was resting on. After all, she ended up in a coma. How long did it last? According to the nurse, it was assumed that it could take "several years" instead of several months or weeks."But... what now?" she asked herself uncertainly, hearing footsteps approaching in the corridor outside the door.
As soon as two people came inside, she moved her eyes and looked at them. It was the same nurse and a doctor who just like her, looked very familiar, even though the girl had never seen him. He was a tall man, dressed in a creased medical apron, with lazy facial hair and very short, black hair, combed quite carelessly.
- You really woke up, for a moment I could not believe it - he commented, stopping only next to her bed - Are you able to move?
Brunette only looked at him, unable to answer his question. Even if she could speak, she would not be able to say anything because of the respirator, but in this case she could not even nod.
- Hm... I guess not - the man sighed, watching her closely - In that case... Well, it would be good if I asked you a few questions. You will have to answer to me by winking. One blink is no and two would be yes.
"*sigh*I don't think I have any choice." thought the girl feeling resignation "What has my life come to..."
- Do you have any more serious headache or pain around the chest?
She blinked once, denying it.
- That's good - he confirmed, when the nurse wrote something in some papers that the teenager could not identify - The coma was most likely caused by concussion. Do you feel like something is wrong somewhere around the brain? Of course don't look at the fact that you can't move, your body just hasn't woken up yet.
Brunette blinked only once. When it came to this sort of thing, she didn't feel like anything was wrong. The only thing that deviated from the norm, apart from obvious things, was her mentality. At the moment the girl was depressed. In the end, she had only just realized what had happened. Accident. Coma. Everything happened so suddenly.
- Ok then. I should not tire you too much with those questions. After all, your body is probably exhausted, due to a lack of any activity. That's why I will ask you the last question today - said the doctor, in a slightly calmer voice, as if trying to show his understanding - Do you know what happened and why you are here?
She blinked twice.
- I understand... I'll leave you now. You should rest - he sighed with a little sadder tone of voice - All right. Just rest for now. The nurse will come here from time to time to check on you if everything is allright. After all, you slept for half a year.
After these words, both employees left the room, leaving the girl alone again. She was slightly shocked by what she had just heard. As if there weren't enough surprises already.
"Half a year...?" she repeated to herself, "I have slept through six months... How...?"
