As the day wore on Jaskier sang a few more songs, some he often did not perform in the taverns. The young bard was happy that his new companion enjoyed his singing. (Y/N) would occasionally ask Jaskier what a song was about wanting to learn the story that lead to the song.
It was dusk when (Y/N) finally made the decision to set up camp. He gathered wood from the forest and began to make a fire. (Y/N) hummed the tune the bard had song earlier that day as he finished the fire.
"You really liked it huh?" Jaskier questioned looking at the other.
"Of course, it was beautiful," he said looking up from the fire, his (E/C) eyes glistening in the light.
Jaskier flushed and looked away. "If you want I can play one I have been working on," he suggested. "I would love to hear it," (Y/N) said, stepping back from the fire and sitting on a log.
Jaskier nodded grabbing his lute strumming it a few times before stopping thinking of how the song went. A minute passed before Jaskier grabbed out his journal and flipped to a page. He looked at his lute and began to play what must have been the song."It's what my heart just yearns to say
In ways that can't be said
It's what my rotting bones will sing
When the rest of me is dead
It's what engraved upon my heart
In letters deeply worn
Today I somehow understand the reason I was born"
The other man's voice was beautiful, (Y/N) found himself staring at the bard as he continued to sing the song.
"Cos outwardly he says I try so
Hard to make you laugh at me
And she, she, does, she laughs as
Though she not heard the joke
ten thousand times before
And he adores her, he watches
Her get dressed as though she's
Hurtling through time
Oh darling please be mine..."
Jaskier strumming the instrument a bit more humming. "It's not finished but this is what I got so far," he said looking at the other.
"I love it so far," the adventurer said, getting up and going over to his pack grabbing some food. "Are you planning on finishing it?" he asked, looking over at the bard."I would love to finish it, I just don't have the muse for it right now," he muttered.
"Hmm," (Y/N) responded, "I understand that struggle.""What do you mean?" Jaskier asked, "No offense, but you don't look like the musical type."
"Well you got that right, I can't sing to save my life," he said with a laugh. "I draw instead, I mostly draw people and it's hard to find a muse when you are in the middle of the woods.""You draw? Would you mind showing me some of your drawings," Jaskier asked with a smile.
"I don't mind," (Y/N) said, grabbing the small leather journal from his pocket and handing it over to the bard. "Just be careful some of the pages may fall out."
Jaskier tenderly took the book from the other man's hands. He opened the book awe struck by what he saw before him. Beautifully, messy drawings of people, most seemed to be at taverns other are of people who might have been travelling with him. "These are amazing," he said, flipping through the pages. Some sketches were neat and wonderfully rendered while others looked like quick gesturing drawings. Jaskier flipped another page and was confronted with drawings that seemed to look like him. "When did you make these?" he asked, glancing up at (Y/N)."Last night, I was struggling with who to draw next actually," he admitted with a light flush crossing (Y/N)'s face. "That was when you started your performance." (Y/N) looked at the fire not wanting to make eye contact with the bard.
Jaskier laughed slightly, "I see what you mean. I am glad my performance gave you a muse to draw." (Y/N) chuckled, "You do make for an interesting muse Jaskier."
Jaskier leaned over handing back the journal. "You have an amazing talent with drawing, ever thought of drawing portraits for noble and royal families?" he asked.
"The thought may have crossed my mind once or twice. I don't think I could sit there for hours and make portraits for these people without finding myself making a comment here and there that could have me thrown in the stocks," (Y/N) said with a laugh as he tucked the journal away. "Have you played any music for any royal families?" he asked."I have played in a few royal's courts," Jaskier said, with a smile, "In fact I played in the court of the Cintra's Lioness, herself."
"Wow, I wish I could have seen that performance," (Y/N) said with a smile."It was an interesting performance," he said.
The two chatted well into the night, breaking for less than an hour for a quick meal before their conversation resumed.
The time seemed to have slipped away from them as the continued telling tales of adventures they went on. Jaskier was the first to retire for the night. When a yawn found its way into the story Jaskier was telling. "My it is late, where did the time go?" Jaskier asked, before another yawn claimed him.
"I did not notice. Get some rest Jaskier, I will keep an eye out for the night," (Y/N) said. Jaskier wasn't going to fight over first watch when he was starting to be claimed by sleep.
"Goodnight (Y/N)," he said with a kind smile before laying down on the sleeping roll.
"Goodnight Jaskier," (Y/N) replied softly as he watched the other lay down. The adventurer turned his attention to the night life that surrounded them.{Surprise Chapter 3!
