Chapter One

Lalisa Manoban, a 24 year old Captain of 1st Marine Division, was stationed in Urk and is currently on her 5th year of active duty, only months away from leaving behind all that she has accustomed from her 5 years of military life.

She decided to enlist in the Marines to continue her older brother, Nickhun's wish to serve his country after he was killed in action on his 3rd tour. Everyone in her family went against her decision – not wanting to lose another member to the war, but Lisa was so stubborn and have already made up her mind.

When you just turned 18 and your 23 year-old brother died doing something he whole-heartedly believed in, it will make you want to do the same or at least, would want to finish what he already started. Well, except the dying part.

Lisa enlisted to finish what her brother have started but soon after, she found her own reason for being there – It was not just for Nickhun anymore. She wanted to help keep the country and the people that she loves, safe. She is very good at her job, so good that she was promoted to Captain a few months back. She manages about 62 to 100 or so men. She is less likely to be in immediate danger and the pay is not bad compared to what she made before. In all her honesty, other than the fact that it sucked being away from her family, she really wouldn't mind staying for another five years. But that wasn't what she agreed on and Lisa is a woman of her words.

"Hey, Capt., do you have a minute?" A deep groggy voice said, grabbing Lisa's attention. Most men would refer to Lisa as Captain Manoban but she has a pretty close bond with some of her men, dropping behind the formalities.

"Sure thing, Bhuwakul. What can I do for ya?" She looked up and nodded for him to have a seat. Lisa is currently in her "office" which is just a desk, a couple of chairs, maps, laptop, radios, walkie-talkies, and scattered papers all under a green tent.

"I was just wondering if you already received the information for when we get to go on leave. Some of our men have been saying that it would be next month, while the others say it will be in a couple of days. I know I shouldn't be asking and should be focusing on my job but my grandmother has been sick and nobody – even the doctors, know if she... you know. It would be helpful to know if I'd get to see her on her last days or if I'd be showing up on her funeral." He said nervously. When you are in a warzone, the last thing on your mind should be anything related to home. The only thing you should be focusing on is staying alive along with keeping all your squad members alive, too. There is no room for mistakes.

As much as Lisa wanted to reprimand Bambam for even asking, she understood where he's coming from. "I will dignify you with an answer only because I feel like if I don't, your mind won't be able to focus on the task at hand." She said sternly, then opened the yellow envelope that has arrived a couple of days ago. She haven't had time to open it, but she already know what information it held inside so she put it on the back burner. After all, it would only make her men focus on the date of their departure rather than on staying safe while they are still here. "Well, looks like you'll get to say goodbye to your grandmother. We'll leave in three days." She said as she read the letter. He was standing up, ready to leave, when she stood up and offered him a handshake. "Private Bhuwakul, I offer you my sincerest condolences." Bambam took the handshake and with that, he left her office.

Finding out along with Private Bhuwakul that they will get a two-week leave in three days made her excited. She missed her family and couldn't wait to see them. Her last leave was almost 8 months ago and if you'd ask her, it was 8 months too long. Her family wrote her letters. She would call or video chat with them whenever she gets a chance but nothing beats an actual interaction with them. Right now, she still has a couple of minutes, so she decided to make arrangements for her arrival.
