On The Road
I stare out the window in the front seat. Watching the sun set as the trees blew. My little sister in the back seat on her Nintendo DS and my mother was driving. Cars rushed by in the other lane as our side was almost completely empty. "Mom." My little sister Missy said.
"Yes?" My mother replied as I continued to look out the window.
"Can I have a granola bar from your purse?" She asked.
"Sure." She said as she motioned me to pass her purse.
I reached down to her purse, picked it up as a picture fell out. I stopped for a moment. I stared at the picture which had our whole family in it. Along with my dad. I got teary eyed, my mom hadn't seen that I had the picture so I put it in my pocket. Passed the purse to my sister and continued to look out the window.
The sun was fully set now. The headlights were on, and barely any cars were on the road. Missy was asleep and I was just about to be as well. "Anne." My mom said.
"Yeah?" I replied to her with my eyes almost shut.
"Do you...miss your dad?" She asked as I stayed quiet.
"Please don't talk about it right now..." I said to her repositioning my body so I faced the window.
"Anne this is serious." I still stayed quiet.
"Anne."
"I said I don't want to talk about it!" I said upset and angry.
I ended up falling asleep. Dreaming about what the house would look like and how nice the people in the school would be. I doubt that people will be nice, but I'm not forcing them to be. I would rather be the quietest one there then the one who makes the fool out of themselves through out the whole year.
I woke up to my sisters music blaring in the car. She sang along with it. "Seriously...can you turn that down..." I said as I yawned.
"What?!" She yelled.
"Can you turn that down!" I yelled back.
She turned it down and went straight for her DS. My mom stopped the car. "Ok guys. We are 5 miles away from the house. When we get there, you have to promise to be nice to anyone who is there. Got it?" She said pointing at us.
"Got it." Missy said.
"Anne?"
"No promises." I replied.
My mom stared at me in disappointment as I shrugged my shoulders. The car finally started to move again.
We finally arrived at the house. The red roof really stood out along with the brown brick around the outside. It was a three story home with a large green yard. Enough room for a dog if we get one. A play set with a slide and swings were also in the front. The steel black gates looked as if it would not allow anyone in or out unless it was opened technically. "This is it!" My mom said shutting off the car and unbuckling her seat belt.
I stared at the house. My eye finally stopped at the sight of a male peeking through the window creepily. "Mom..?" I said but she was already out of the car and half way to the front door.
I got out of the car and walked up as well. The brown painted door with a fancy doorbell caught my eye. Mom knocked as I continue to stare. The door opened as my attention was officially grabbed. A male with blonde floppy hair opened the door. You could tell he definitely dyed it because the blonde was almost as bright as the sun. "Hi ladies, come on in." He said.
We walked into the house only to see a bright crystal full chandelier that hung from the ceiling. A giant living room and a set of stairs that went up. "My name is Nick. Nick James." He said as he shook Missy's hand then mine.
He put his arm around my mom as they smiled and rubbed noses. My eyes became wide. "What...the fuck was that." I said.
"Anne! Language!" My mother said.
"What was that!?" I yelled in anger.
"It's called a nose kiss! Something couples do!" She yelled back then suddenly stopped.
I froze. "Oh my god...I'm sorry I was going to tell you..." She said trying to calm me down.
I felt as if my head were about to pop like a balloon. Her boyfriend stared at me in surprisment. My sister stood there in disgust, and my mother stood there. She looked as if she were about to cry. I finally unfroze from amazement. "How could you!!" I screamed as I bolted out the door.
"Anne!" My mom and her boyfriend yelled at the exact same time.
I kept running as fast as I could. Still had my backpack on my back which made me slow down just a bit, but not enough to where anyone can catch me.
"Go after her!" I heard my mom scream.
The next thing I knew was being chased down by my mom's boyfriend.
A half hour later I finally reached the bush. The leaves blew and my mom's boyfriend was far back. For a minute I thought I lost him but I could see him in the distance. It seemed as if he was out of breath. I turned back to the bush, realizing that the trees looked as if they were closing, because how close they were to each other. I stepped forward only to find a sudden pressure. Thinking about what I was doing. "Anne!?" I could hear my mother say right behind me.
I pushed her back. "Why are you cheating on dad!?" I yelled in anger while looking away.
"I am not cheating on him!" She yelled back moving closer.
"Yes you are! You know dad is alive!!" I screamed.
"No he's not!!!!" She screamed louder then normal.
I turned around. Tears started to build in my eyes as I fell to my knees. "Wh-what?!" I cried.
"He died in the war! I got the letter the night we left but I didn't want to tell you! I didn't want to hurt you and your sister!" She started to cry.
I got up and went to her. She told me the story of what happened as I teared up.
