Michael was tired. Sitting on his seat, he could only come to that conclusion. It wasn't the tiredness that most people were used to when they woke up, but the soul-sucking, mind draining, utter exhaustion that can only come from certain things. He sighed and put his head in his hands.
"I don't know if I can keep doing this," he sighed. The train rattled as it went around a corner, the tracks worn by the many tons riding over it again and again.
Michael didn't have much to complain about. 23 and fresh out of college, he worked at a decent place, had a decent life, and even looked pretty decent. But something was missing. Something was trying to pull him away from life into its dark reaches.
He looked up into the sea of people also on the subway, headed off to the daily grind. Of course, nobody saw his pain. He was just one person in a sea of thousands of schmucks riding public transportation to work. Probably with a lot more problems than he had.
Suddenly, something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. He quickly glanced over to see what is was, and caught a young woman looking at him with concern.
Embarrassed by being caught ogling, she quickly looked away as her face turned red. Michael chuckled to himself and smiled. He was amused at someone breaking the social faux pas just to look at a man struggling on the inside. It even gave him pleasure that someone was truly looking at him than the dull masses that stared into nothingness.
The train lurched to a halt as it came to another station. The woman stood up and took with her a backpack and headed towards the doors. As she was stepping off, she flashed him a smile. He returned the smile and watched her walk down the platform.
As the train continued on, Michael could help but think about what happened. Something about that short connection had sparked more interest than his last three dates on Tinder, not that that actually meant anything. She occupied his mind, like she knew something was up. He wondered if she could see inside him.
He shook his head. She was probably being nice. Still, it made him smile. He continued his journey, thinking about the mysterious woman all the way.
