❛ WHAT A PRECIOUS BASKET CASE!

SUMMARY ───
ANN BASSET IS STEADILY approaching a conclusion that she is hesitant to reach: nobody would care if she suddenly vanished. Incorrigible and calloused, Ann Bennett is left friendless and surrounded by family members that don't truly care about her wellbeing. Raised in a patriarchal family, with three older sisters and one younger brother, Ann wasn't supposed to exist. Her father wanted so badly to have a son, and when Ann was revealed to have two x chromosomes, she was pushed to the side. Given a name so short and pitiful, A-N-N, without even a pleasant "e" tacked onto the end, she was destined to be in the background for her entire life. Her younger brother, Bobby, was given all of the attention upon his birth. Ann and her three sisters were nothing compared to the boy god that their little brother was.

So, Ann grew to despise anything that reminded her of her parents or authority in general. She struck out against her teachers, vandalized police cars, and terrorized her parents. She had the effortless ability to destroy anything she came into contact with, a red-haired tornado that ravaged and broke and damaged. Her hatred for authority surpassed anything else, which eventually ended with her on the front doorstep of Stanley Barber's house.

Ann wanted to destroy her life, and she figured that starting small and progressing toward damnation would be best. First, she would start with drugs, of which Stanley Barber would supply—considering he was known around school as a reliable marijuana dealer. Then, she'd escalate to other drugs and hopefully overdose before she reached the age of eighteen. There was one little problem in the execution of her plan, however. She didn't really expect to develop a friendship with her drug dealer, nor did she expect to be led on an expedition to help a girl with telekinetic powers and a temper that rivaled Ann's.

When life gives you lemons (a shitty life where you aren't valued simply because you were born a woman), make lemonade (give a girl with anger issues some tips on how to stop being so fucking angry all the time and simultaneously try not to catch feelings for her).

NOTES ──
first off, the summary is absolute trash so if you want to tweak it, go ahead

ann bennett is inspired by ann nash from gillian flynn's novel sharp objects! basically, her parents wanted a boy, so they had a bunch of kids until they ended up with a boy, leaving the girls to be neglected and mistreated. ann grew really really sour because of this and is a literal demon from hell but i love her.

ann is a tomboy and has a fascination with spiders. she has a pet tarantula named lucy and she takes really good care of her.

sydney and ann don't get along at first because their personalities clash sometimes. ann is very headstrong and doesn't like it when syd tags along with stanley. ann is hella protective over her friendships and she'd probably go crazy if stanley replaces her.

when ann finds out about sydney's anger/her telekinesis, she definitely sympathizes. ann gets these moments where she gets so angry that she feels like she's on fire, and she destroys things (i.e. breaking mirrors, vandalizing bathrooms, etc.). but, where syd destroys things with her mind, ann destroys things physically.

the title of the book is inspired by the song "choke" by i don't know how but they found me. it's representative of her desire to watch everybody choke and destroy things & ya.
