"Where the hell have you been?"
Midnight | Sirius Black

"Sirius, it's midnight, where the hell have you been?" Y/n y/l/n whispered at her best friend through gritted teeth as he appeared through the door to the Gryffindor common room. Sirius pulled his tie off from around his neck, strolled into the room, and threw himself down on the nearest armchair. Y/n sighed and dragged a hand through her hair in frustration.
As soon as they had finished dinner, Sirius and the marauders had disappeared, leaving y/n to walk back to the Gryffindor tower alone. She had spent the rest of the evening catching up with various pieces of homework and essays for class, not paying much attention to who had entered and left the room. Around ten o'clock, the usual curfew for her and the rest of the sixth-year students, she started to worry when Sirius' friends returned without him, claiming that he was "dealing with unfinished business". Y/n knew that they were famous for causing trouble and pulling pranks, but she didn't want Sirius taking it too far.
Not receiving a reply from him, she stood in front of the fire and glared down at him. Usually, at this time of night, she would have already snuck her way into Sirius' dormitory to gossip about their day, but not tonight.
"Sirius! What "business" was James talking about? You didn't set up another prank on Severus, did you? At the rate you're going, Sirius, Slughorn is going to catch you and you'll be expelled." She rambled on, still being met with complete silence from Sirius. More than anything, she was worried for him. She groaned and flopped herself down on the chair opposite him.
"Can you please talk to me? You are alright, aren't you? Sirius?" Y/n rested her arms on her knees and stared at him, her head in her hands. He continued to look fixedly into the orange flames still burning brightly in the fireplace. Giving up, she kicked her legs up onto the arms of the chair and faced the ceiling. If he wasn't going to talk to her, then he would have to deal with the awkward silence, she decided.
As she lay there in the quiet, y/n thought about all of the possibilities for Sirius being out so late. Although he was popular, he didn't have many close friends apart from the marauders and herself, and he almost never set up pranks by himself.
Still sprawled out over the chair, y/n turned her head to face him.
"Were you, uh, meeting somebody?" She asked him gently, expecting him to ignore her like he had been doing for the past ten minutes. Surprisingly, his eyes met hers and she noticed an expression of panic quickly pass over his features. He managed to compose himself again, not realising that y/n was already beginning to fear the worst.
"Who would I be meeting? All of my friends have been in bed for hours," He laughed breathily, trying to ease the tension in the room that he had created.
Fixing her eyes back on the white ceiling, y/n shook her head. She could feel that Sirius' eyes were still trained on her.
"No, I mean, a girl. Were you meeting a girl?" She asked him hesitantly, slightly scared to hear his response.
Y/n heard rustling from the other side of the room and turned her head in time to see Sirius abruptly sit up and stare at her with a frown on his face.
"And why would I be meeting a girl at midnight on a Friday night?" He asked his friend, the puzzled expression remaining on his face.
Instead of being upset, like she had braced herself to be, y/n was becoming just as confused as Sirius was. However, the stare-off that they seemed to be currently having was much better than him ignoring everything that she said.
"Um, I don't know? Because you're single, aren't you?" She asked him, sarcastically.
"Well, yeah, technically," He replied, shrugging his shoulders and leaning back against the armchair cushions.
"Technically? Have you got a secret girlfriend or something?" Y/n laughed, trying to cover the hurt that she felt inside. Surely she would know if he did have a girlfriend. Sirus only grinned back at her and shook his head. His eyes shone with something that looked like amazement, and it told y/n that Sirius knew something that she didn't.
"Of course I don't,"
He winked at her.
"Yet."
She rolled her eyes, tired of his jokes.
"Oh yes, I can imagine it's only a matter of time before one of the girls on your list finally becomes your official girlfriend. Congratulations to the happy bride and groom." Y/n joked, smirking as he rolled his eyes.
Suddenly his expression cleared like he had sobered up from drinking.
"There's only one name on that list, y/l/n, and I think you know whose it is,"
