They loved each other.
It was an old tale, one that many had heard before.
The story of Romeo and Juliet.
They just wanted each other. To hold, to kiss, to love and to cherish for as long as they could. It had started so innocently when they bumped into each other in the halls. Just two little freshman.
After that first meeting, their infatuation had turned into something much, much more than either of them could have imagined.
They spent hours at a time with one another. They held hands under the bleachers and shared a chocolate milkshake as the others fumbled around on the field. They would giggle, the girl and the boy, because at that time they had nothing to worry about.
They grew together. The two studied, cried and relaxed in each other presence. They held hands and laughed and lived in unity.
They were the best friends each other could have.
Then they grew older. They shared kisses and light touches. It was more intimate now. Of course, something would stand in the way of their love.
Parents. Her father told her on numerous occasions that he wasn't good enough for his only daughter, didn't believe the boy could have any good intentions. Didn't believe he was the one.
That left one option. Sneak out.
So they did. She climbed out of her window every night, her boyfriend waiting in his car.
And they drove the Eastside of New York. They drove through the back streets in his father's blue Corvette.
Together they drove through the coast on late nights, laughing and singing along to the tunes that blasted from the radio.
If this didn't love, what was?
By seventeen the couple had their entire life planned out. A family, a house and everything in between.
But life catches up, doesn't it? And so even by the age of twenty-three, they didn't have what they so desperately wanted. Instead, they were stuck in dead-end jobs, with bills and pressure.
The friends they once had were now enemies.
But they remember each other.
They remember the love.
Even after all this time, they can still look back on what they had and smile.
He moved away with his new girlfriend. She's engaged.
While they live nowhere near each other, the two will continue to not only love the memories but also the first person they shared everything with.
Because he used to meet her on the Eastside, and she used to meet him on the Eastside.
In the city where the sun will never set.
