"The homework tonight is..." BRRIIIING!!! That was the bell. Everybody ran out of class and to the cafeteria for lunch. Erudite usually stay afterwards to see what the assignment is, but the aptitude test during lunch today is way more important.
I sit at my usual table, alone as usual. They are calling groups of ten to go to the testing rooms for the aptitude test. "Excuse me." I look up to see a woman. "Yes?" I ask. "You'll being going with a group of Abnegation. Is that alright?" I nod.
"Bella Matthews." My name finally called. I go into the room and see that the person giving me my test is Dauntless.
I walked into the room and sat down in the reclined chair. She started something into the computer. "Are you really related to Jeanine Matthews?" This is the exact reason why I don't tell anybody my last name. I decided to lie and say, "Yep." She looks at me with a look that says she doesn't buy it. She then shrugs.
"What's your name?" I ask. "Somebody's curious." She says. "That's how I was raised." I say. "Tori." she states. Tori hooks up wires to the both of us and hands me a glass of clear liquid. I drink the liquid, no questions asked. I didn't want to be Erudite. I'm not Erudite.
_____________________________I opened my eyes, not remembering that I had closed them. I was back in the cafeteria. "Choose." I turned around. There were to two bowls. One with cheese, another with a knife.
"Why?" I ask. "Choose." she said again. "Why?" I ask again. I need to know the situation before I choose. If I chose the wrong one, I "Choose!" She yelled. Suddenly, she and the bowls disintegrated and I heard a bark. I turned around only to see a growling dog.
I should have grabbed the knife, but there is obviously no turning back. I didn't know what to do, but then it donned on me. It isn't real. None of this is real.
I looked down at my feet and grabbed a stick that wasn't there before. I throw it and yell, "Fetch!" The dog runs after and comes back to me. He licks my face and drops the stick at my feet.
"Doggy!" A little girl yells. The dog turns vicious again and is about to pounce. I jump in the way and it bites down hard on my arm. It isn't real. "Let go." I command. It lets go and I walk out of the cafeteria.
_____________________________When I am walk out, I am suddenly on a train. A Candor man with a newspaper comes up to me. "Do you know this man?" He asks. I look at the picture he is pointing to. The picture is of a young man with a beard and the headline says, "Brutal Murderer Finally Apprehended!" As I look at the young man in the picture, I feel like I know him but not exactly.
"No." I lie. "You could save my life if you tell me the truth!" He yells. "I don't know him." I lie again. I look behind the Candor man to see the bearded-young man from the picture. He has a gun and is aiming at the Candor. Right when he is about to shoot, I jump in the way.
_____________________________When I open my eyes I see that I am in the testing room. "What were my results?" I ask Tori. "Inconclusive." She says. "Inconclusive?" I ask. "You have aptitude for Dauntless, Abnegation, Amity, and Erudite." She says.
"Abnegation for when you stepped in front of the little girl and the Candor man. Dauntless for being brave enough to step in front of them without a second thought. Erudite for your curiosity." She smirks at me. "And Amity for being peaceful." She finishes.
"You can't tell anyone about this." Tori says with a serious tone to her voice. "What do my results mean?" I ask. "You're Divergent, and before you ask, it is dangerous. My brother was Divergent, too. Jeanine killed him." She says. I feel sorry for her, but I don't show sympathy. I don't think the Dauntless like pity.
"Are you really related to Jeanine Matthews?" She asks again. "No." I say, not telling her the whole story. "Is that the whole story?" She asks. Is she reading my mind? "I was abandoned in her doorstep as a baby. Ever since then, I've been a test subject to create better humans. I have inhuman abilities." I say.
"Okay. So, for your test results, I'm just going to put in Dauntless." She says, as she types something into the computer. "You can go, I'll just tell them you got sick." She says. "Okay." I say. "Remember, tell no one." She warns. "I won't," I say, "See you in Dauntless."
