the classroom was darkened as curtains were pulled over the windows. only light from the projector reflected off of the clean whiteboard that bounced back onto the faces of the sleep deprived students.
"we're going to starting a movie focused on the events of World War 2, so prepare to take notes. you'll turn them in at the end of the week.", mr. landon notified as he held a remote in one hand and another one in the other.
i sighed and reached down for my binder which was full of lined blank pages. my name was called by the needy peers surrounding me. after handing sheets of paper around, i popped out a pen, writing my name, the date, and the heading.
the movie started within five minutes. i hunched over and rested my head against my arm, closing my eyes for a split second. an unpredicted booming voice came over the loud speaker. i lifted my head up and gazed at the back of the student that sat in front of me.
"attention students", the feminine voice began "today is a memorable day."
i looked around the room and saw uninterested facial expressions."as most of you know, today was the day kim taehyung who was a former student seven years ago, passed away in a tragic car accident."
murmurs and confusion stirred up. i slowly turned my head to the left where my best friend sat next to me. "who's kim taehyung again?", she whispered. her eyes held pure innocence with the question. i looked at her with a merciful look.
"do you remember back in fourth grade, the kid who died in the car accident on his way home from visiting his dad?", i slightly raised an eyebrow.
her mouth mimicked an 'o' shape as she half remembered the incident. he was never kim taehyung to anybody; rather a personal nickname that was given to him by each classmate.
"let's take a moment of silence as we remember him.", the loudspeaker lastly announced. the faces of many were washed over with a wave of desolation; some still remained confused.
some last announcements were made and mr. landon resumed the movie. i jotted down notes lazily until the bell rang, freeing us from first period.
i hooked my backpack over my shoulder and scurried out of the classroom as fast as i could. gina followed behind half a step from me.
"shocking that you couldn't remember noodle boy.", i teased her.
she groaned and stopped at her locker. "it's not my fault that my brain is the size of a cell!", she expressed.
gina furrowed her eyebrows while slowly opening her locker. "what did you remember him by? he was pretty much remembered by nicknames, wasn't he?", she questioned.
"when i met him on the playground, he introduced himself. the first thing that came to mind was tater tot so i called him that since then.", i told her.
i walked away from my locker with my arms hugging the science book. my mind pondered the day of the news, repeating the death of the ten year old boy.
once i made it to the crowded classroom, i made my way to a seat. i closed my eyes and rubbed my temples, trying to relax myself. a migraine engraved itself in my brain.
"diz-bae !!" , a male voice called.
i opened my eyes to see yoongi hovering over the desk. his gummy smile captured my attention which then instantly made me smile.
"haha, get it? "diz-bae" kinda sounds like "dis bae" cuz like dis bae cute as hell !", he said.
i popped a small laugh and shook my head. his smile then faded after seeing mine disappear. only sympathy reflected from his eyes into mine.
