Chapter 1

No one dies a virgin, ‘cause in the end life fucks us all. Kurt Cobain. It is true what he says. No one can really deny that. Life just has to fuck us up at least one time before we pass.

I turn my head to find my 22 year old sister, Maya. She sees me and hiss, scrunching up her nose. I rolled my eyes then turn to my 15 year old sister, Gem. She gives me a small smile, sadness in her eyes.

I sigh and stare at what’s in front of me. My parents next to each other looking, well peaceful I guess. I stare at both their faces, my mind filled with questions of What Ifs.

I don’t think I can do this; I stood up and walked out of the church. Leaning against the wall, I quickly grabbed a cigarette from my pocket and light it up.

‘You know cigarettes are bad for you Jacky.’ A voice said. The voice that I didn’t wanted to hear the most at the moment.

‘Fuck off Carl.’ I replied taking another drag.

He smiles, ‘I think you should go back inside. If your mom and dad saw this I don’t think they’d like it.’

‘They’re dead.’

‘I know, I’m at their funeral.’

‘Just fuck off Carl.’

He sighs and sat down on the pavement next to me. ‘I love you, you know that?’ he says as he takes my cigarette and takes a long drag before handing it back to me.

I don’t answer which makes him chuckle. ‘C’mon Jacky, you can’t just shut everyone out.’

‘I’m not’

‘Yes, you are. You can’t deny it Jacky. You’ve been missing school for the past 2 weeks; you haven’t picked up any of my calls, nor returning any of my messages.’

‘I just need some time okay Carl? And by that I mean alone!’ I snapped. That sure made Carl angry. He shakes his head, got up and walked back into the church.

‘They said they want to be buried in Eugene.’ Aunt Jodie says. I stared at her in disbelief. ‘That’s literally 3,000 miles away!’ I shouted.

Aunt Jodie shrugs, ‘Their dying wish.’ Was all she could say.

‘What? They want us to drive all the way to Eugene and bury them?’ Maya asks also thinking that this is a stupid idea.

‘Well, not bury but spread their ashes there somewhere. They said that if you really open your eyes, you’ll see.’ That’s all aunt Jodie says before she walked over to greet some relative of ours.

Gem holds my hand and squeezes it slightly. I look at Maya waiting for an answer. She stares at me, ‘It’s the least we can do, I mean, we weren’t really good kids.’ She says uncomfortably.

We weren’t really good kids. I know exactly what she means, because it’s true, well apart from Gem ‘cause she’s the smart and good one out of the three of us.

‘So I guess we’re going to Eugene?’
