The word Postosuchus means 'crocodile from post'. Postosuchus was the largest carnivore in it's time. It was a large 4-legged reptile. It's limbs resembled those of a crocodile. Originally it was built to walk on all four legs but then it developed a way of standing upright. They were lone hunters and used the element of surprise to ambush their prey like the large Placerias (though they only attacked their young ones or ones that were weak as they where very strong. More information on placerias in the next chapter). These dinosaurs were very territorial, especially the females. Most of the females had less territory than the males but defended it more fiercely than the males did. These dinosaurs were very aggressive and were willing to fight to gain territory by killing the other and claiming it. Though they were the largest predator living in their time, they could still be injured when attacking full grown male Placerias. In the dry season, food got scarce so they would go on rounds to make sure that they have enough food. These dinosaurs will destroy or eat eggs of its own kind in a fear that they will later be a threat to them. The younger dinosaurs of their kind grew up in large and dense forests where they were safe from the adults.
