I kicked a can on the sidewalk across the street.
It struck the side of a new-looking car passing through, and the driver honked the car's horn in response. I snickered and gave him the finger.
That made the car pull over onto the sidewalk across the road. The driver threw his door open and stepped out, turning around to face me. Over 200 pounds of sheer muscle and scales, the reptilian-looking demon took a step towards me, shouting something I couldn't hear over the commotion of more cars speeding between us.
Despite not being able to understand what he was saying, I still shouted back. "Whatcha gonna do, Scaly?" I taunted, putting my hands on my hips. "Go eat a bug!"
The traffic chose that exact moment to stop up. Before I knew what was happening, the lizard creature was zipping towards me on all fours, expensive suit be damned.
"Oh, shit." He must have heard me. I turned and dashed down the street. Footsteps followed close behind me.
Spotting an alleyway up ahead, I ran into it as fast as I could. My pursuer hadn't expected my sudden turn and failed to duck in on time, tripping on garbage that was conveniently tossed near the entrance of the alley.
I kept running, knowing he would get up soon. I expertly avoided trash and homeless demons, sometimes jumping off walls to get to where I was going faster. I caught stairs protruding from the side of a building and climbed up them three at a time.
My name is Ruth Kadas, and I am never getting caught again.
I heard the lizard demon approaching and decided to cut running altogether, jumping to the side of the stairs and climbing up that way. My death had taught me that I couldn't let any situation catch me off guard. I taught myself stealth and how to fight as soon as I had arrived in Hell. This was one of the times where fighting was a last resort.
Once I reached the top of the building, I quickly realized I was trapped. My last resort was now my only resort. Cursing under my breath, I decided to stay on the edge of the roof and see if I could kick my follower off the stairs.
I heard him before I saw him. Boy, he was loud. Once he spotted me, he moved faster, almost tripping a few times. I rolled my eyes. For someone with surprising endurance, he wasn't very graceful.
He finally made it to me, breathing hard. He stuck a pointed finger in my face, which was unnecessary since he was much taller than I was and much closer than needed. "I'm going to make you wish you hadn't been born," he snarled. From this angle, I could see his eyes, complete with bright yellow irises and thin pupils.
"Someone else already did that, sorry," I replied, shrugging.
I shouldn't have said that. I received a punch in the stomach that would have emptied it if I hadn't skipped breakfast. I fell to my knees, wheezing. My arms found their ways around my middle section, but I forced them to stop. I looked up to find the other demon towering over me.
Anger streaked through my body until the punch wasn't the only thing shortening my breathing. "How dare you," I raged. No one was allowed to hurt me and get away with it. Not anymore.
I felt my hands heat up. I glanced down at them. As expected, fire was now blazing at the ends of my fingertips. I grinned, feeling my smile tug unnaturally at the ends of my face.
I slowly peered up at the lizard and found him horrified. He hadn't been expecting a small, harmless-looking thing like me to have a power like this. "What the --"
I stuck my hands against the demon's legs, watching flames bite at the fabric of his pants. I laughed loudly as the anger evaporated from his face, quickly replaced by panic. He screeched and slapped at the fire, jumping back, but all it did was spread it faster.
