Many had told Todoroki his mother's death was simply an accident. Todoroki knew better. Hell, he witnessed the damn incident himself. He knew it was no accident.
Todoroki remembered the event quite vividly.
It began when his father had returned home quite angry. They'd lost the previous battle in the Northern territories. Todoroki had watched his mother desperately try to calm his father but to no avail. He only got angrier. Fire practically dripped off him as he went on a rage throughout the castle. Todoroki's siblings pleaded with their mother to stop trying, to let their father be, but even then she didn't listen.
The arguing had begun on the third evening of Endeavor's return home. Loud yelling from his parents echoed throughout every corridor of the castle. It turned into many late nights. The castle never seemed to silence.
Several months passed and their mother had grown fearful of their father with each passing day, fearing to speak or to even be near the man she'd married. It was evident to everyone that Rei was no longer happy. She held marks to prove it to anyone who was curious enough to ask. The kingdom soon grew to hate the king they had once loved.
Finally Todoroki had had enough. He wanted to speak to his mother. He didn't like his father any more than his mother did now. He found her in the kitchen of the castle, now absent of any cooks as most of them fled from Endeavor's growing anger. It had been clear his mother had been avoiding him as well as his father and Todoroki needed to know why. He hated feeling outcast from his siblings, especially when his mother was more than upset with their current situation.
"Mother..." Todoroki started.
His mother turned, her eyes wide with fear. In her hand she held a small cauldron of boiling water. Her hands were shaky and Todoroki watched her zero in on the left side of his face, the side that resembled his father the most. He took a step back as a darkness seemed to enter her eyes as she stared at him, the fear ebbing away.
"Mother." He said again, glancing from his mother to the cauldron in her trembling hands.
With a shriek his mother had launched herself forward, bringing the cauldron with her. The boiling water sloshed out and found its way directly to Todoroki's left side. The water burned but not as much as what happened next. His mother snapped out of whatever daze she'd fallen into. Upon seeing what she'd done, she had rushed to her son's side and applied her hand to his face. The pain had been excruciating as she desperately used her ice powers to try and stop any of the water from leaving a mark. Her attempt only made things worse.
The following morning had been hell. Once his father noticed the new formed injury on his 'prized' son he absolutely lost it.
Flames erupted from all over his father's body as he roared in anger. Rei desperately tried to calm her husband down but couldn't get close enough for him to even have a chance of hearing her pleas. The heat was quickly becoming unbearable. The castle shook and the rock and marble it was built from had started to drip down like hot wax.
That's when it happened. The worst thing Todoroki ever witnessed in his life. His father shot fire out in all directions. His mother was engulfed in flames, turned to mere ash. The castle began to fall, falling apart just like their king had. Endeavor's perfect little kingdom was now shattered with each of his children now buried somewhere beneath the rubble. And with that he left it all behind, never giving any of it another thought. Todoroki was left with the last sight of his father disappearing into the smoke.
