•• Doc ••
The state of utter euphoria takes over.
I'm happy, there's a smile on my face that I have missed so much.
My arm is slung around Ben's neck and his is slung around mine. We're dancing, okay maybe not dancing but stumbling around to Sweet Caroline and loving the idea of being buzzed. We're not drunk, we haven't had that much to drink but we're young and like Ben says; 'being a teenager is kinda fun'.
"You know what we should do Doc?" Ben gasps, his mumbled words swirling in my head.
"What Ben?" I reply quickly."We should go down the beach, down near the rainforest. Take everyone here right now, and a 24 pack of beer, our surf boards and your guitar and head down to the beach." His eyes glisten with excitement.
I know that look, it's a look of determination. Once Ben has an idea, there is no turning back."I dunno Ben," I slur, "probably not the best idea. Why don't we hang here?"
"No, c'mon Doc, live a little!" He exclaims, "Please, please Doc."
I roll my eyes; "fine, my guitar is in my Ute, gather everyone up."
Ben shoots me an infamous grin, "loosen up Doc! Smile! Life is good man."
I nod and watch as he darts through the small crowd of teenagers. A pair of green eyes meet mine, they're familiar, and captivating. I ignore them, shaking them from my mind.
'Life is good man!'
Our catch phrase.
Ben's method of pulling me out of my own head and into the sunlight.
His constant reminder to me that life is so much more than just my dark thoughts.
That it was guitars and surfboards, and friends and sunshine. That it was waves and laughter and little sisters.
That it was nights like this. So, with my guitar secure on my back, and my surfboard under my arm, I stroll down to the beach. The breeze whispers words of wisdom and the ocean speaks the truth as waves dance onto the sand.
My friends chatter and laugh as we set up camp on the warm sand. Ben and Ella giggle, their lips pressing against each other's, as they grin.
Fred is pointing out constellations to Beth, her head is tucked under his arm and her cheeks are flushed with the warmth of the night.Jon splashes Olivia with the cool water, causing her to squeal; "give it a rest Jon!" She cackles.
"Not until Doc starts playing a tune!" He replies.
"Please Doc!" Olivia cries, "I'm begging you."
We all laugh, "not yet Liv, I'm going for a surf." I chuckle, grabbing the waxed board from the sand. The green eyes meet mine again, this time with sense of urgency, as if they were begging me to surf.
