It started with a simple mistake, a rip in a glove and a doctor's failed judgment. Two simple little mistakes, mistake anyone would have made, that lead to the end,
I may not be making any sense right now, so allow me to back up a bit. It all started on the day of elections at our school; the day when the new class officers would be announced. Seems like nothing right? Not exactly in our teeny tiny town. Our town was essentially a little village designed to house the workers of the CDC. It provided quick and easy commute to work. This being said, our town was still very small, so when something like school elections took place, it was a pretty big deal.
Every year, the town would gather in the school's auditorium and listen to the officer’s last speeches before the winner would be announced. It was really the only thing exciting that happened around here. This year, it was the same two candidates running for president as last year; Kelly Griffin and me, Spencer Summerland. Kelly Griffin can be described in only three words; serious, ambitious, and a bitch. But why would I just stop at three words? She was my high school arch enemy. Everything I did, she did better. And everything she did made me want to do it better. Kelly Griffin was a stoic, emotionless bitch who was brilliant. Before I met her, I thought I was the smartest kid around. But she put me to shame. She was pure genius. The only thing I had over her was that I was a people person. Kelly had brains, but I had charisma.
Anyways, the whole town sat packed, hip to hip, in my school's auditorium. The candidates for VP, secretary, and treasurer had already made their speeches. It was time for the main event, the presidential candidates. Freshman year, I was president. Sophomore year, Kelly was. Now we were juniors and it was time for the tie breaker.
As Kelly stepped up to the podium to deliver her speech, I scanned the crowd. There in the front row sat R.J. and his dad. R.J. was my best friend since middle school. I was over at his house every weekend, he had been there for me since my mom left my dad and he became a stinking drunk. He was taller than me and wiry thin. He was a lot like Kelly, book smart. He had jet black hair and pale skin. He was a spitting image of his father, the man who acted more like my dad than my own.
Beside R.J. sat Kevin. He was taller than me also but stocky and little chunky. Unlike R.J. and I, Kevin was neither book smart nor people smart. He was simply sweet and happy and that's all that mattered. The people around school usually called us the Eds, since we sort of resembled that old cartoon. I never saw it.
That's when I realized Kelly's speech was over and she was walking off the platform. Kelly had long brown hair and black eyebrows and eyes. She was about my height but skinnier. For the event, she wore a pencil skirt and a blazer. She looked like a real bitch.
Anyways, I stepped up to the podium to deliver my speech. I had gone over it for weeks, perfecting every single period and space. It was superb. Kelly's speech had nothing on me. In hindsight, it was pretty pointless. The ballots were already cast. I could've gone on stage naked and it wouldn't have mattered.
I had just stepped up to the podium, in my white dress shirt and tie, when all hell broke loose.
A man that had been sitting behind R.J.'s father suddenly began screaming like a banshee. His pale face turned red has his throat strained against the scream. The chords on his neck stood out. And that's when he leaned forward and sunk his teeth into R.J.'s dad's neck and bit a chunk out.
There was silence for a bit. Total silence. Then the screaming began. All at once, people jumped out of their seats screaming and crying. They all headed towards the exits at once, which was stupid.
That was when R.J.'s father suddenly raised, a wild look in his eyes. And that's when he lunged for his next victim, a man sitting beside him and sunk his teeth into him.
