You may have noticed these movies are a bit "out of order" (not the dates, the episode numbers), and may have thought "Why are they so out of order?" Well, I can tell you just that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope was first released it became simply "Star Wars". Lucas reputedly wanted to call it Episode IV as an homage to vintage serials, no longer actually as a 4th episode in a larger tale, but the studio idea it become a bad concept to confuse audiences, so the title was dropped.
When Lucas wrote The Empire Strikes Back's tale, he made a big trade to the overall saga. When Lucas determined that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father, he multiplied the story into something greater. Coupled with the large success of the primary movie, Lucas determined that Darth Vader's tale changed into going to be told finally as a prequel trilogy, and then there could be at the least another trilogy afterwards (Lucas at diverse times stated there'd be 9 or 12 episodes in total). Around this time, Star Wars became re-launched with the episode range and subtitle brought to the outlet crawl.
Lucas semi-retired from movie making among Episode VI (1983) and Episode I (1999) to elevate his children. He waited till visual outcomes were able to portraying the Star Wars galaxy at its height (Lucas supervised numerous the post-production on Jurassic Park, where he realised SFX become desirable enough).
Another alternate passed off when Lucas wrote the prequel trilogy. He informed the story of Anakin Skywalker in such a way that it made the 6-part saga a entire tale. There turned intonowhere else to head after Episode VI, and Lucas said there might be no greater movies. However, sometime round 2010 Lucas seemingly began working on a brand new trilogy, but now not tons is known approximately the tale (it reputedly had fewer ties to the original trilogy than the non-Lucas written Episode VII).
