Chapter 2

Ray

Cole watched Scarlett pace back and forth like a ticking time bomb ready to explode. As if it was the only way to contain all the energy inside of herself so she wouldn't explode. There was so much to her, he wasn't sure he would ever figure it out or if he would even be given the chance to.

After this they wouldn't see each other again, right? They would go back to their own lives and continue on. Why would they bother to meet again? She probably thought Cole was weird by now. He wasn't one that was good with words or people for that matter... He always said the wrong things; just being up-front and honest, not holding back and throwing everything out there.

She was still pacing in the tiny cell that they shared. Her moving back and forth was driving him mad, making it harder for him to think. She stopped and looked at him. "What?" she said sounding a bit annoyed.

At this moment he realized that he had still been looking at her. Yet even after she looked at him, he stayed looking at her, trying to figure her out. There's always so much you could know about someone when you look into their eyes. She seemed calm yet hurt. Like she had a barrier blocking out all the pain, or maybe she was keeping all the pain locked inside... trying to tame something that can't be tamed.

'Why keep it in? Why not let it out?' he thought. But who was he to wonder when he, himself, never seemed to let anyone in. Never let anyone see all the pain that there was to see. Only letting them see the good parts and not the bad.

Noticing that his eyes were still locked on hers, he couldn't help but look down at the cold and empty cemented ground beneath his feet. What was he going to say to her? Why was he over thinking? Was there really any logical explanation as to why he couldn't seem to keep his eyes off of her?

"You’re pacing... It's making it hard to think." he said, a slight smirk on his face.

He wanted to laugh for some odd reason… maybe because this whole thing felt awkward, but he was the one making it awkward. He couldn't even find the right words to say. He was making himself seem like a dumb ass to this complete stranger that had somehow captivated his attention. He was still pondering the thought of whether he should say something else before she spoke. Instead he just looked at her again, awaiting a response.

Glaring at him intensely, Scarlett hoped against hope that he would take the hint and shut up. Regrettably however, the boy seemed too oblivious for his own good, stubbornly staring fixatedly at her hazel-brown eyes.

This boy had managed to frustrate her beyond recognition. Scarlett couldn't help but compare him to empty space in this moment of time. What with his tendency to just sit back and waste every precious second while she stood pacing back and forth in hopes to find a solution to this mess.

"Making it hard to think my ass" Scarlett murmured lowly.

What did he need to think so deeply about anyway? His parents were coming and soon he'd be safe and sound in the comfort of his own sweet home.

Oh how she wished that would be true for her too. But whereas he would be surrounded by caring, loving people, she would be in a sea... a sea filled to the brim with angry seagulls, poking and prying in search for exactly where she ran off to.

She did not want to make eye contact with him anymore. If he could figure her out so fast what’s to say he couldn't rip away the rest of her hidden layers and uncover more about her and her past.
