"Guys, I can't believe we start junior year tomorrow," Big Red sighed, leaning back further into the beanbag chair he was lounging on.

"Yeah I'm kind of freaking out.." Reagan bit her lip, looking up from the endless TikToks she was scrolling through, "I hate first days already, it's worse that I'm at a whole ass new school."

"Yeah but you have us," Ricky said, throwing an encouraging arm around the anxious looking girl. "And I'll introduce you to Nini tomorrow and I'm sure you guys will be best friends too."

It was actually quite sad how sure Ricky was that he and Nini would go back to normal tomorrow. I hate to admit it but it seems too good to be true. There was no way a girl like Nini, from what I've heard of her from Ricky, would ever wait around all summer for a boy. I mean c'mon. Ricky asked for a pause when she said I love you. But I couldn't really bring myself to break that to Ricky. Plus, who knows? Maybe things will work out for them.

"Thanks Rick," she smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. She felt really lucky to have met Ricky. This summer, the two had gotten really close. She told Ricky all about her life back in Chicago, her Mom abandoning them, how much she missed her friends, her love for music... all of it. Ricky told her about Nini, and his parents fighting. There were some nights where Ricky would "accidentally" fall asleep on her bed to avoid going home. Ricky would never tell her that, but Reagan always knew.

She helped distract him from the stress of his parents and Nini. He helped her feel welcomed and excited to be in Salt Lake.

Reagan's phone buzzed in her hand with a text from her brother Wes, saying he was outside. "Hey guys my brother's outside. Rick you stayin' or you need a ride?" she asked, while slipping on her sneakers.

"Uh, I think I'll stay, but I'll see you tomorrow?"

Reagan nodded, "Wes said he can drive us. Be ready around 7:15 sharp!" she narrowed her eyes at the boy, knowing he would probably be late. "See ya tomorrow Red!" she quickly wrapped her arms around the dorky red head, without messing his video game up.

The rest of the night, Reagan got everything ready for her first day tomorrow. Her strategically selected outfit was laid out on her desk; shoes, jewelry and all. Her backpack packed and ready with notebooks and colorful pens. Reagan just hoped that this year was stress-free, drama-free, and she managed to make a few more friends.

After making sure everything was ready for tomorrow, she grabbed her songbook and guitar and plopped herself down on her window nook. She began strumming a melody that had been stuck in her head for a few days now, as she skimmed through her book trying to find some lyrics that matched.

Seems like a part of me will always have to lose
Every single time I have to choose
Swore that it felt right, but was I wrong?
Is this where I'm supposed to be at all?

"Sounds good.", a soft voice scared the shit out of her, causing her to yelp. To no ones surprise, Ricky Bowen was peeking his head in through her window.

Maple Street consisted of a bunch of town houses. Each house was connected by a small beam, that was most definitely not a bridge, but Ricky always felt the need to walk across it into Reagan's room like it was.

"God Bowen, can you knock?" Reagan rolled her eyes, placing her guitar back on her stand.

The curly headed boy cheekily smiled as he knocked on her window sill, before fulling stepping into her room. "Better?" he asked.

"Annoying ass," she muttered, before flopping down on her bed. "What do you want?"

The color drained from Ricky's face as he realized why he was really visiting Reagan. He laid down next to her, letting out a sigh. It wasn't that he didn't trust her; he did completely. It was just, saying it aloud made it more real.

"Hey," Reagan spoke softly, seeing the distress written all over Ricky's face, "what's wrong?"

Ricky let out a shaky breath before rolling over to face Reagan, "My uh - my Mom left for Chicago earlier. She said it was a "work thing" but I just know it's not."

Reagan's heart ached seeing the always smiley boy, so broken right now.

"I'm just scared that she's not going to come back, and if she does.. things will never be the way they used to." he mumbled.

"Rick-" she began speaking, but Ricky cut her off. "I don't want to talk about it right now, but can I just stay here for the night?"

"Yeah, of course." she sent the boy a light-tipped smile, and began to run her hands through his curls, something she knew usually calmed him down.

"Hey what do ya say I make you the super secret Ellis brownies, and we watch any movie you want?" she glanced down at the boy.

"I'd say you're my favorite person ever, and we're watching Captain America Civil War," he smiled up at the girl, thankful to have met her.

Laughing, the two got off of her bed and made their way downstairs to the kitchen. "So listen Bowen, only special people get to eat these brownies, and only extra special people get to watch me make them."

"So am I extra special?" he flashed her the best puppy dog face he could muster up.

She smiled at the boy before deadpanning, "no go set up the movie," she shoved him out of the kitchen.

"Wow you really know how to break a guy's heart, don't ya Ellis." Ricky sighed dramatically.

A couple of minutes later, Reagan plopped down on the couch next to him and played the movie.

"I'd definitely be team Iron Man. Cap is just way outta line in this one." Ricky shook his head, watching Captain America refuse to sign the Accords.

"Are you kidding? Listen I love Tony Stark with all my heart, but you're telling me you wouldn't stand up for your best friend like Cap is for Bucky?" she exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air. Launching the two into a heated debate, much like they did with every movie they watched together. Ricky watched as she put up a finger for every argument she made in favor of Captain America, making him laugh to himself. It was amazing how she automatically helped him forget about his problems.
