Betty watched from afar, eyes glossy and tears burning to run free. She had gotten dressed up and let her tight ponytail down to impress her guy at the party. Well, he used to be her guy.
The past weeks they'd been on-again and off-again continuously. She didn't know what they were anymore, so she went out of her comfort to meet his needs. He was wild and loved partying, she was quite and loved nights in.
She was the one tirelessly fighting for their love to continue to blossom. Well, her love to continue to blossom and him just being there. His love blossomed for someone else and it was the night he let that girl know.
Betty was heartbroken. He chose her best friend, Veronica Lodge, over her. The one that was always more than good enough for everyone, while Betty was the try hard. She was called that, at least, and began to see it in herself too.
Meanwhile, Archie smiled happily as he leaned over Veronica's thin body. She was giggling and wrapping herself around him, lying her head on his chest as they swayed to the music. She finally felt happy, having his arms around her sweetly.
A tiny tingle of guiltiness suddenly flooded through he veins and she tensed. She could tell that someone was watching them, and her stomach tightened. She wanted to shake her head and say Betty wouldn't be there because she never went to parties, but then she reminded the talk they had before school ended.
Betty was going to be attending the party.
Veronica jerked her head off of Archie's chest and made eye contact with the broken blonde. "Betty!" she called, untangling herself from his arms and jogging up to her. All to quickly, Betty broke off into a sprint in the opposite direction.
Veronica looked back at Archie would had a small frown on his face. "What was she doing here?" he questioned.
"She wanted to impress you... get you back," she murmured.
"We broke up... I told her I found someone new," he says to her.
Veronica gives him a meek smile. "She really loves you," she points out. "We need to go and talk to her."
The pair quickly went outside to see a sobbing Betty Cooper curled up on a bench beneath a streetlight. The glanced at each other before approaching, both sitting next to her, Archie on side, Veronica on the other.
Veronica softly laid her head on Betty's shoulder and to her surprise, the blonde then wrapped herself around her. Veronica returned the hug and rubbed her back soothingly. "We are sorry," she whispers.
"Betty..." he started to say.
"You could have just told me that we were over Archie," she let out.
"I did," he says, running his hands through his hair in a very frustrated pattern. "I said that I was over you, we were done, and I had found someone else."
"So you chose Veronica over me?" she cried out.
"It wasn't a competition. I just fell in love with her and she fell in love with me," Archie simply said.
Betty stayed quite, her body shaking as she let out silent sobs. "Are you mad at us?" Veronica then asked after a long moment.
Betty sat up before standing up. "No, these things happen. People fall out of love with somebody and fall in love with someone else. I'm sorry for causing troubles... here," she said, reaching forward and taking Veronica's hand before putting it on top of Archie's that's sat on the bench. "Take care of her. More than you did me."
All Archie did was nod in understand before the blonde stalked off. As soon as she was out of hearing distance, she started sobbing loudly. As soon as she was out of their sight, she started sprinting home. She was broken, but she knew the man she loved would be happy.
Veronica scooted closet to Archie, laying her head on his shoulder as they watched Betty's silhouette disappear into the night. Archie wrapped his arm around her in response, laying his head on hers.
