Rendezvous with a Rose
a rondeau
“Meet sub rosa,” she said to me,
I wondered where that could be,
Puzzling o’er her words so meek,
To find these roses I would seek
That we might meet securely.
Perhaps she meant along the quay,
I could not say with certainty,
Where was it, of where did she speak,
“Meet sub rosa?”
Loud with the buzzing of the bee
In rose gardens of great beauty
I would touch the bloom on her cheek.
With thoughts of her I grew so weak.
If only we could but secretly
Meet sub rosa.
