"papa! I'm heading out to collect some apples from the orchard, au revoir!" lion yelled cheerly from his stone built kitchen as he slipped his foot into his wellington boot. getting up from the handcrafted wooden dining chair he'd built with his father a number of years ago, he hopped with a satisfying thump of his boots hitting the stone tiles beneath his feet.

life on a farm was challenging for a young 19 year old olivier flament to say the least, but he always tried his best to make do with what he had and more importantly, make his parents proud. his sister had moved away around 3 years ago, following her desire to pursue a career in the film industry; which left olivier to be a single child with hardly any contact with the outside world of toulouse.

his father gave him the nickname: "lion" for always being such a loud and proud kind of guy, he was a good boy nonetheless. striving to work hard on the farm to support his parents who he knew sadly were growing older and weaker day by day. he feared for the time he'd have to manage the farm alone to support them, but at least they were still fit enough to work in the time being.

grabbing his large straw basket his mother weaved for him from beside the back door, opening it, he dashed off into the dewy grass and breeze filled air of a spring morning. basket trailing behind him as he hurried, a smile tugged at his lips as he spotted the ripe apples in the distance.

cautiously running through the fields of corn, he neared the orchard eager for the prime of the picking. clutching the step ladder leaned beside the gate, he shoved it under the nearest tree he found and climbed it. a little overly excited, he grasped a lower hanging apple and tugged on it, twirling it in his hand as he examined it with a proud grin.

"parfait..." he whispered, staring at the shiny skin as it glistened in the sunlight. placing it into his basket, he reached for more.

as he was almost done with the tree, he spotted on last apple slightly higher than the rest. he furrowed his brows with determination and stood on his tippy toes, clutch the tree trunk for support as he used his free hand to reach for the final apple. growing impatient, he pressed all his weight on his toes until suddenly he felt the ladder shaking beneath his feet. a rush of panic came over him as he tried to restore his balance, but the ladder had already buckled, toppling over and taking lion with it. he screamed out as he hit the ground feeling a sudden sharp pain in his knee. scurrying to his feet in worry, he noticed a large cut across his knee, a familiar red liquid beginning to seep out. his face grew pale as he clutched the basket, lugging it behind him as he limped through the corn fields wincing.

approaching the back door biting his lip, he stumbled inside and leaned against the counter.

"mama!" he called urgently, to which the sound of multiple people could be heard coming towards him. she rushed into the kitchen with a worried expression and got to her knees as soon as she spotted the wound.

"i'll grab him a seat." a voice announces but he couldn't make out who it was as his mind was clouded. "here, boy. sit." he felt a grip on his shoulder and his bottom land onto the dining chair.

he took a moment to catch his breath, examining the people in the room. two older folks and a boy who looked to around his age... he gave him a sympathetic smile as he came closer.

"please step aside miss, i have been studying first aid for years now." the boy requested patting her shoulder, she nodded and got up off the ground, backing away.

"are you going to be okay, olivier?" she asked with worry.

"i think so, mama. don't worry about me." he insisted, waving her off.
