It was three in the morning. Alice was awakened by an intense contraction. I think it's time, she said to herself. She tugged William on the arm to wake him up.
"Will, wake up... I think I'm in labor." Alice said while holding on to her huge stomach.
Will was jolted awake by what he heard.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes-- Ah!!" Another contraction made her writhe in pain. A few moments later, her water bag ruptured and she could feel warm liquid running down her legs. "Oh my god. This is really it, Will. We need to go to the hospital now."
William jumped out of bed and grabbed their bags from the closet. They have already packed them two weeks before her due date. He helped Alice into the car and drove to the hospital.
William's mother, Mrs. Quinn has heard the rumpus from her bedroom but she remained inside. Instead, she took her cellphone and dialed up a number. "They're on their way." Then she hung up.
Alice was wheeled into the delivery room while William was told to wait outside. She labored for more than four hours. The baby was born at 7:25 in the morning via normal delivery. It was a healthy baby boy. A few minutes after, Alice felt another contraction. "Oh, it seems like you're having twins." The doctor said. Alice was instructed to push again and after roughly two minutes, a baby girl was born. Alice, who was exhausted from all the pushing and a little bit groggy from the local anesthesia had a faint perception about what was happening inside the room. The doctors seem to be in a commotion. Suddenly, everything went black.
The door of the delivery room opened and the doctor came out to tell the news. William stood up anxiously from his seat, his hands squeezed together.
"Are you the father?"
"Yes. How's Ally?"
"She's doing fine." The doctor appeared a little bit nervous and gave out a slow, heavy sigh. William felt that something was not right.
"Why? Is there something wrong?" He was starting to get scared.
"Your wife and son are okay... But your daughter didn't make it..."
"You mean we had twins?"
"Yes... "
William suddenly felt weak in the knees. He didn't know what to feel. It was a bittersweet moment. A birth and a death, both at the same time. How will he tell Ally about their daughter? How will she take it? He took a seat again to regain his composure.
"I'm sorry..." The doctor offered him her sympathies. "You're wife will be transferred to a private room as soon as she wakes up." Then doctor went back inside.
William sat motionless on his seat as he stared on the floor for what seemed like eternity. Tears slowly rolled down his cheeks. He never knew so much love until that day.
