It was the Friday before prom and the whole school was buzzing with excitement, including Summer. She had her dress, her earrings and heels picked out. The only thing they didn't know was transportation. They were standing at Maddox's locker trying to talk on lunch. They never spent lunch in the cafeteria, they always just went off somewhere to eat and make-out. The intensity between them was powerful.
"So..are you driving tomorrow or did you convince your dad?" She grinned at him.
He frowned. "My mom set it up, we're good to go. My dad has been more of an asshole than usual the last couple days. You can't say anything to him without the wrath of God coming down. Some work thing has had him in his office yelling at people all week. Whatever it is, it's bad." Maddox squeezed Summer's hand. "I would never treat you the way he does my mom, I swear."
Summer looked at Maddox curiously. "Do you see us having a future together?" Her eyes bore into his, looking for the truth. Her stomach twisted slightly as she was afraid he might answer in a way she wouldn't like.
Summer's look gave him pause, he'd seen her so many ways. Scared. Hurt. Happy. Angry....damn she could get angry. But, Maddox had never seen the kind of vulnerability he could see in the look she was giving him now. He kissed her softly.
"Of course. I thought that was obvious? You're all I will ever want, and more than I deserve."
Summer relaxed some by his response. She was prepared to give him all of her and she wanted to be sure that they were on the same page. "Good," she sighed, smiling and leaning her forehead against his. "I just wanted to confirm. Speaking of confirming," she looked up and grinned wide. "Did you make the reservations for dinner?" She was nearly bouncing on her feet, she was so giddy. "By the way, I'll be wearing a killer dress. It shows off major cleavage. You will be dying to get me out of it all night," she winked at him and giggled.
"Shit. Dinner. I.....," he winked at her. "Of course I did." Maddox laughed appreciatively at Summer's excitement. "I can't wait to see it. I might have to get looser fitting pants."
Summer laughed at his pun, then bit her lip at the thought of him swelling in his pants just from looking at her.
He crossed his arms and looked at her seriously. "Since you have been killing me with your little secret all week. I got you a surprise too."
She smiled at him brightly. "Ooh!! What is it? When do I get it? Can I have it now?" She rapid fire asked him, excitedly. She was excited that he got her something, but she'd bet on it, hers was a bigger surprise for him.
Maddox grinned at her. "You only have to wait until dinner. You've been torturing me for a week. I will give you a hint though, it's almost as pretty as you are."
Summer looked at him confused. "Wait until dinner?" She sighed, "Ok, fine. I guess I'm making you wait until the night is over. So, I can wait until dinner." She giggled and winked at him. Then, she leaned in for a kiss. "I'm beyond excited, baby."
"I am excited too. My surprise keeps getting more mysterious." Maddox took Summer in his arms and touched his forehead to hers. "I was thinking. This is basically the end of high school," he paused, seemingly unsure how to go on.
Summer smiled up at him. "Yeah, that is true. What college have you decided on or are you going to work for your dad like he wants?" She bit her lip nervously.
"I don't know," Maddox replied, obviously conflicted. "My dad doesn't take no for an answer and he thinks college is a waste of time. He is not a man you piss off. At least not twice."
"Twice?" Summer was concerned now. She cupped Maddox's cheek and peered into his eyes. "What do you mean twice? Did you piss him off before?" Summer knew his dad could be a real asshole and he wasn't afraid to take out his anger on his wife and children.
