Maybe this is how tanjiro is turned into a demon. It could him battling against muzan and he loses his sword ( on purpose) so he can't fight because muzan is his father figure and this was part of the plan, but with dawn approaching its getting harder for muzan to escape the hashira's. Suddenly tanjiro sees a sword being thrown towards muzan, so he steps in front of muzan and takes the hit. This would shock the others because tanjiro just saved muzan and it would give them a chance to escape. Tamayos cure isnt as effective because muzan was told the effects from tanjiro, so he was able to fully cure himself in the fortress before the final battle. Muzan successfully manages to leave carrying tanjiro and finds a safe place to give tanjiro his blood and turns him into a demon. The uppermoons barely survive and are keeping a low profile so they can heal and it will give the element of surprise once they battle again.
