THIS SCENE TAKES PLACE AT THE END OF THE STORY.
"MOM?" I called out to her. Nothing felt better than getting back in my warm home after staying over for two days at Evan's. The roads had been cleared out early, hence leading me here; home sweet home.
"MOM?" where was she? Isn't she back from the hospital yet? I wondered. Well she did say she was going to be home early today.
I grabbed my bag of delicious ruffles as I headed to her room, I was eager to tell her about me and Evan finally getting together. Oh my ruffles, I missed you so much.
Just when I was about to enter, I heard my mother's voice coming from her room. I assumed she was speaking to someone, because the last time I checked, she was completely normal.
"No I haven't told her the whole story behind the Woods' family." I heard my mom say. The Woods family? That's Evan's family!
Curosity filled my veins. What did she know that I didn't? I clinged my back to the wall next to the door. I know eavesdropping wasn't a really good habit but I couldn't help it. I needed to know what she was talking about and to whom.
She went on talking, "I can't tell her that her father and Evan's mother were having an affair, I don't want them both to know anything about their family's past. Gloria, this is only between you and me."
My eyes widdened, my heart fell from its rib cage, my bones trembled. My father and Evan's mother were having a love affair? My breathing rapidly kept increasing as I dropped to the floor falling right on my bag of ruffles.
Get a hold of yourself Jules.
I closed my eyes and held my face in my palms. This could not be possible. I don't want them both to know anything about their family's past. Her words kept echoing in my head. The next moment I opened my eyes I saw my mom standing in front of me. She stood above, expressionless in fear that I heard everything.
"Jules, how are you back so early?" she asked.
I didn't have the strength to respond to that, but instead I asked a question of my own; "why mom? why?". I knew my eyes were tearing up, I could sense them turning blood-shot red.
I was still sitting on the floor leaning against the wall waiting for an answer.
"Jules, I have no idea what you're talking about," she confirmed faking a laugh. "I'll get you a cup of coffee, calm down."
"I don't want coffee, I want to know dad's past." tears were now falling down from my eyes.
"Jules, it doesn't matt-"
"Please mom, tell me."
My mom sat down on the floor next to me, she took my hand and held it to her chest as she began to cry. This was something I just couldn't bare; to see my mom cry. Instead of consoling her, I just sat there staring at her, watching her cry. My heart was aching, it felt like my soul had detached from my body. I felt so lifeless. She wiped her tears and let out a long sigh.
"So here it goes..." she began, trying to grab hold of herself. "Your father and Evan's mother were in a love affair. Evan's father knew all about it and this is why he treated his wife in such a manner. The day-after their death, when Evan's mother was going to take Evan and Helen and leave, that day Evan's mother and your father were going to meet up. I know Evan's never told you all this because he doesn't know all this. The reason why me and your father had a divorce is because of Evan's mother." my mom looked away from me, trying to search for words. I know she wanted to stop talking about it, but I insisted on knowing the whole story.
"Why did you cure Evan and Helen then? Don't you hate them?" I asked.
"No sweety, why will I hate them?! They don't even know about this." she said pulling up a painful smile as she stretched her hands to cup my cheeks.
Thinking about it, the pieces clearly fit in the puzzle now. Mom and dad are no more together because of Evan's mother, and Evan's father tortured his wife because he knew all about this affair. Evan's father must have figured it out that his wife was going to go to my father when Evan told him they were going to leave, leading him to kill Evan's mother. I shook my head, this was unbelievable.
"Where's dad?" I asked mom as I looked at her with my puffy and swollen eyes.
"Don't know, don't care!" she responded as she pulled away her hands from my cheeks.
My head was messed up. I was bewildered by the whole situation. My mind was racing and my heart was beating furiously. Knowing this truth is going to change my life forever. I stood up and walked towards my room like a zombie, it felt like I was nearly dead.
Just then my mom pulled onto my shoulder and turned me around.
"Honey, I can imagine the affect this has on you, but please don't tell Evan all this. It will kill him sweetheart. And plus I don't want you to sacrifice your future with him because of the past. You're understanding what I'm saying right?"
I nodded. But that was definitely not happening. I couldn't hide the truth from him, he would find out sooner or later. I didn't want to feel lost and sad around him, I had to tell him.
But the question is; will I ever have the courage to tell him?
