One thing I hate more than anything else in the world is secrets. Which is ironic, because my whole career revolves around the biggest one I've ever kept. Only a few close people know about my secret, which is good, because if it ever came out my life would be over with a snap. I guess I should explain a little.
You see, I don't exactly live a normal life. I'm actually a top model working for some of the biggest brands while attending high school and achieving good grades at the same time. If anyone at my school found out, they wouldn't believe it at first. After all, I'm not exactly beautiful. I have dull brown eyes, ghostly-pale skin, frizzy hair, and big, bushy eyebrows. In the model world I'm known as the mysterious Ava with no last name or address, but at school I'm known as Avaline Quinn.
It's not like I want to lie. More than anything I wish I'd never gotten myself into this mess. But my agent Hannah says that if I'm already this deep in, I have to keep it going. There's no easy way to get out of this. I've considered myself lucky that no one has found out yet because honestly, it wouldn't be too hard to put two and two together.
"Ava?" My BFF Skyler appears in the doorway. I turn around and glare at her.
"Have you ever heard of knocking?"
"I thought you giving me your apartment key took away that whole process," Skyler laughs.
I want to laugh along but there's no time for that. "Ugh, I look like a frizzy mess," I say instead, glancing in the mirror. Skyler smirks.
"Aren't you supposed to?"
Skyler is one of the few non-family people who know about my little - well, huge - secret. She's a model as well but she's a real model. You know, with actual beauty. She just started a while ago so she's not that popular but her career's growing by the minutes.
"Shut up and help me," I snap. Skyler comes over and brushes out my hair while I apply a minimal amount of makeup. She hands me a loose hoodie and sweatpants which I change into, then follow her into her Mercedes, a little something that her agent talked someone into getting for her.
We pull into school early and Skyler hands me a Starbucks and shoos me out of the car before getting out herself. Unfortunately, I walk straight into Jaden, the most popular, most evil girl at our school.
"You geek!" She shrieks, shoving me backwards. Skyler reaches out and catches me.
"She'll get you a new shirt Jaden, yeesh." Skyler mutters the last part.
"Are you kidding me? This is a limited edition one-of-a-kind top from PINK! Not that you would even know what that is," she adds, trying to get the coffee out of her shirt. I have to stifle a laugh. Little does she know I have so many extras of that shirt.
"Sorry Jaden," I squeak. She glares down at me and in one swift move takes her arm and knocks my books out of my arms.
"Oops, sorry." She smirks and as I bend down to pick one up one of her friends kicks it across the parking lot.
"Fetch," Ali calls. Everyone watching bursts out laughing. Tears well up in my eyes. Don't cry. Do. Not. Cry. Sometimes I really want to tell Jaden that I'm the girl she admires every day in her magazines. That would shut her up for sure. But that would probably destroy my career, so I usually just go along with it.
The bell rings and I groan everyone hurries off to their separate classes. So much for being a perfect student at school.
"C'mon, let's go," Skyler whispers as a teacher comes down the hall. She hands me my books and shoves me through the door into homeroom.
"Sorry we're late Mrs. Davis, Avaline tripped and dropped her books."
Mrs. Davis gives us a curt nod.
"Sit down girls."
Gratefully, Skyler and I grab seats in the back row. Usually I would sit at the front, but since we came in late I don't see any point in attracting more attention to myself. Skyler passes me a note.
We have a photoshoot after school today remember? I still can't believe you got me in! I hope I can be as good as you someday.
I didn't, actually. I gulp. What if Mrs. Davis gives me detention at the end of class for being late? I scrawl a message and hand the note back to Skyler.
Actually I forgot. But don't worry, you are amazing.
She rolls her eyes at me and starts writing again.
"Skyler Thompson?"
Uh-oh. Mrs. Davis is standing in front of Skyler, hand out for the note.
"Y-yes Mrs. Davis?" She stutters, losing her usual cool. I see her trying to hide the note. If Mrs. Davis reads the note in front of the whole class we're doomed.
"May I please have the note?"
Skyler holds the note up to her chest.
"Mrs. Davis. Please. It's very personal."
Mrs. Davis eyes Skyler.
"If I make an exception for you I will have to make an exception for everyone." He taps his foot impatiently. I bite my lip to stop myself from making a remark about how many times he's let Jaden off the hook. "And you know gossiping is against the rules."
"It-it's a family issue," Skyler spits out. "It's really serious."
Mrs. Davis eyes her. Finally, she pulls her hand back.
"Fine. See me after class. Both of you," she adds, turning back to his desk.
"But that's not fair!" Jaden cries from across the room. "I thought you didn't make exceptions."
Mrs. Davis turns to her.
"Focus on your work Miss Jameson." She faces us again. "I'll be waiting after class." Then she goes back to talking about the schedule.
Skyler and I lock eyes. This is not good. Not good at all.
I really hope you guys enjoyed and if you did please vote for this chapter <3
