(Ivy in the MM)
Chapter 1:
Ivy's POV
The harsh sound of my alarm pierced my ears and jolted me awake. Upon shifting in bed, I attempted to recollect myself and figure out where I was. It then hit me that today was the first day of my junior year at Summit High School in New Jersey- a place completely different from California. My father wasn't in the picture for very long- after my younger sister was born he packed his bags and left. I never saw him again, and that was that. My mom did her best to fill both spots and was the light of my life simultaneously. My mom worked as a clinical psychologist and knew all the right words to say and how to help through any low dip. When her boss told her about an opportunity to have her own set of offices, and train other upcoming psychologists, she jumped at the idea- but it meant leaving California and moving cross country to New Jersey. Was it hard? Yes. I had to leave the friends I've known my entire life, and move somewhere foreign and attempt to start over as best I could. My sister and I relied on each other for support when mom was at work- we soon became each other's foundation and refuge.
Suddenly, that same piercing alarm for 7:15 jolted me back to reality, and I made my way to my bathroom and got ready. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, began to put on light makeup, and finished with mascara and lip gloss.
The weather outside was okay. A high of 57 was predicted and seemed to be true. Over my Pink set of undergarments, I put on my light wash jeans that featured a series of rips and shreds throughout, and pulled my knee-high black boots over my socks and laced them in the back. I then pulled a white fleece over the shoulder top over my head, grabbed my keys and backpack and strutted to my 2016 Chevy Cruze. My sister Hazel followed quickly behind me and sat down in the seat next to me.
"Ready Ivy?"
"As best I can be."
The rest of the ride was filled with talk about goals and aspirations for the day.
"Do you think the boys there are cute?"
"Hazel, leave me alone. Don't you have better things to worry about?"
"Nah not really."
I mean mugged her while pulling into the parking spot.
As soon as the car was put into the park she waved me goodbye and went off to the underclassmen section of Summit. I rolled my eyes and laughed, I hung back and laid down wondering what my first day would be. Throughout my daydreaming there was a constant- the hope that I would have a good first day.
When I heard the first bell ring, I left my car and walked through the crowded halls to my Literature class. The teacher, Mrs. Allen seemed somewhat bizarre but likable at the same time. She rambled on about syntax, and dashes the whole hour, making me laugh inside my head. Calculus, General Psychology, and World Mythology all presented a syllabus to go over with parents and sign. The usual: don't cheat, academic dishonesty, how work is graded, and the best way to reach the teacher. I was bored out of mind- but time seemed to speed by as I was in my last class, Biology with Mr. Robin. His room was what a traditional science classroom looked like, cold tile floors with a "distinct" pattern, black tables that fit two students normally placed with another to create a group of four, and a Promethean board at the front of the classroom, and the usual eyewash station in the right corner. I tried to maneuver to a table with four, but seats were taken right as I approached. I sighed and made my way to the black table in the corner and put my backpack down. As Mr. Robin began his rules and expectations for his class when a boy walked in.
I sat up straight and began to observe his features. He was tall, roughly 5'10. He appeared foreign- that of Italian descent. His black wavy/straight hair framed his face and rested on his forehead and stopped at his eyebrows- the best eyebrows I've ever witnessed. Brown eyes were housed in by long eyelashes, and soft pink lips rested below his nose that curved a little- possibly indicating an accident had happened in the past. The boy had cute ears- ones that folded at the top yet stood tall. He wore a white and green Adidas shirt, with light wash jeans- holes at the knees, and white and green Adidas shoes to match. He was eye candy. 100%.
"Ivy!" Mr. Robin yelled abruptly.
"Huh, yea?" I replied after being whisked away from my analysis of the new boy.
"Instead of daydreaming, focus on what I'm saying. Standing next to me is Mattia Polibio. He's going to be sitting in that vacant seat next to you. Mattia go sit down and take out your notebook."
All eyes fell on me. I turned red, put my head down on my desk. I felt and heard some shifting behind me, and turned over to see Mattia's face inches apart from mine. I turned red again and backed away.
"Umm.. do you need something?"
"Yea a pencil. I left mine in my locker."
I looked at him and reached down and grabbed a pencil from my backpack.
"Good looks."
I shook my head and avoided eye contact with any of the girls giving me death stares as well as the teacher. The class dragged on and finally, some 45 minutes later the bell rang and we were excused. Mattia had bolted out of class and failed to at least say bye to me. I dropped my head, sighed and went to my car and waited for my sister. She was socializing with friends up until she reached my door, and waved goodbye to her newfound friends. Whilst my sister was making friends, I failed to even make one. On the drive home, I simply thought to myself that this year was going to be a long one.
