Misplaced steps
A place long forgotten
Visited on a newcomers whim
Screams sound in the distance
He knows not where or whom, all he knows is that something has awoken
A sound which penetrates not only ears, but souls...
An echo-- an emotion-- a place quickly fading
As his footsteps quicken, it begins to fade away, the shadows envelop him once more
Time flies by in flashes and swirls, a never ending stream of infinity
People come and go
Places are built and wear away
There was a time long ago when all seemed bright
And laughter could be heard
A laughter, which at the time felt like it could go on forever
Little did they know, the darkness had already begun to settle in
A familiar cold
A familiar touch
He wanted to tell her- warn her of what was to come
But as he got ready to do so
He could tell it was breaking her apart
The laughter quickly died
Leaving a void so large and dense, he felt it would crush him
She was his final hope
His only light
An angel from the heavens themselves
She too, had run
Run from a darkness
A corruption he was all too familiar with
Through fate alone, they happened upon each other
It felt like destiny
Together, they were strong
Supporting
Holding
Caring
But it was too late for them
The poison had been planted
The more he revealed, the more it hurt her
But she was his only escape
He could not have seen- predicted- foretold the future
Or maybe he did and was made blind to it of his own volition
The familiar bonds that once gave them both comfort started to feel like a prison
He had wronged in a way that was unforgivable, even if she could not tell
And she felt a sorrow deeper than the darkness beginning to surround them
Everything was normal?
Everything was going well?
Everything was going to turn out alright...
But he was living in a broken dream
Hiding from the shadows of his past
There came a point where he could take it no longer
He had to break free
It was not her fault
She was perfect in every way
But they were just hurting each other more and more
He thought he could help
Make her better
He thought he could leave her behind in the light and trudge on alone
He was wrong
He turned his head and cocked an ear
Perhaps this was not a scream of pain or fear
What if it was misunderstood
A figment of his imagination
It was wrong of him to be here
Wrong of him to read her hidden sorrows
This could all be a mistake though
A miscommunication
Maybe none of it held any meaning anymore
As he continued further into the darkness, there was an odd sense of familiarity
A familiar warmth... a smile.
But that was quickly swallowed by the icy wind of emotional turmoil
He did not deserve her
He did not deserve to know her
Her purity and kindness was unrivaled by even the lord of creation himself
As more time went by and the hours became days
And the days, weeks
And the weeks, months
He felt a pang. Loneliness. Hopelessness.
He had abandoned the one person he truly cared about and turned a blind eye to what really mattered
She was not forgotten, or ignored or unloved
He was just scared
This was not regret
But remorse.
