It's been years since the war. Although I was just a toddler, barely even that, I remember everything. I remember the sky turning red with fire, and ash clouds so thick, no sun shone through. I clutched to my mother as my family ran towards the safe house. Father had built it with what little money we had left over. We ran inside and shut the door, everything was dark. Father lit a match and a room came into view. I don't remember much about the room, just that there was a box of candles and shelves full of what must have been supplies. I soon fell asleep to the warmth of Mother.
We must have gone down an unseen tunnel while I was asleep, because when I woke up I was in Fathers arms and Mother was leading the way with a backpack on her back and a candle in her hand. It was dark all around, and the sound of water dripping was quiet in the distance. I tried to look around, but I could only see as far as the candlelight would allow. I saw something move behind Father. I can't recall what it looked like, but I pointed to it. I remember Father looking behind at what I pointed to, then everything was a blur. Light was everywhere, but it wasn't the typical white light of daylight, it was bright orange and red. There were terrible shrieks, unlike anything you could imagine. Father ran with me safe in his arms, Mother close behind. Whenever I tried to look behind us, mother came in my way and just smiled at me, but even at that age I knew something was wrong.
We made it out of the tunnel and we got in a wooden boat and set sail as fast as possible. Father set me on the deck and helped ,Mother on. A silhouette came onto the boat in a flash. There was a horrible scream from Mother, Father, and the creature. I never saw Mother's smile again.
