It was a cold world for people like Nakamura Koichi.
The thought often crept into his head at the strangest times. As he looked over to his friend, who was munching dedicatedly on a red bean bun, the thought came once more. Oh, how desperately he wanted to replace that bun. Ren could much on him instead. Koi shook his head; how could he think something like that? Such things were taboo, but it wasn't anything new. Koi had thoughts like these ever since he was a little kid.
Kobayashi Ren was Koi's best friend of ten years. They met in primary school, and their friendship had carried into middle and high school. Ren was eighteen, a year older than Koi, but he often acted like he was much younger. That maturity (or lack thereof) was what distinguished the two. That and the level of their social capabilities. Ren was a social butterfly; he was loved by his classmates and teachers. But while he was smart, he was no match for Koi's genius-level intellect.
"Do you want some, Koi-kun?" Said Ren, waving the half-eaten bread in Koi's face. "You did buy it after all."
Ren often did stuff like that, though it still flustered Koi. "Um..." he sputtered, "n-no thanks." He dismissed the offer by waving a hand in front of his face.
Ren shrugged. "Alright, just don't complain about being hungry." Koi looked at his feet with a reddened face. It's been ten years, he thought. I shouldn't still be acting like this around him. There came a rustle to the right of Koi. It was Ren standing up from the bench.
He stretched his arms up in the air, and with them came the shirt tucked into his pants. Koi stared as the shirt tightened against Ren's torso. He could feel his breathing become jagged and his heart rate increase. Then it was over. Ren had resumed his normal stance and Koi could no longer ogle.
"Let's go. Classes will start back up soon."
Koi nodded and stood up as well. He followed Ren inside the building and up the first flight of stairs. This is where they parted. Ren's class was on floor three, where the third-year classes were. Koi was stuck on the second with no friends. He said goodbye and slid open the door to classroom 2-4. Now that lunch was over, the students were full of energy and very talkative. If it wasn't enough that he had to leave Ren, the immediate noise swarming his ears caused him to sink into a foul mood. Koichi hated loud noises. He hated talking, he hated people.
Suzuki-Sensei cleared his throat in an attempt to get the attention of the rowdy class. This startled Koi, for he had been so far in his head that he hadn't noticed the teacher walk in. Tapping his stack of papers on the front podium, Sensei began to speak.
"Welcome back..." and Koi tuned out the rest. The remainder of the school day went by slowly, all he could do was draw in his notebook and stare at the clouds. As soon as class was dismissed, Koi began to pack up his things. He needed to get out of there quickly in hopes of catching up to Ren.
Right as he got up to leave, one of his classmates stopped him. "Nakamura-kun, we are going to karaoke, wanna come?" He turned to face the voice. It was Ito-san.
"Who's all going?"
The girl turned to face a group of about a dozen kids. "About half the class."
Koi said abruptly, "no thanks."
His classmate's demeanor became sourer. "But... you never come to class events. It makes us think you dislike us."
"I don't hate you," Koi chewed his inner cheek thoughtfully, "I just have plans." Just as he said it, Ren passed by his classroom. Koi caught a glimpse of it from the corner of his eye. he managed to turn and watch before Ren had passed by completely.
