"Be back soon!" Izuku assured his mother as he slipped his shoes on and headed out the door.
It was a muggy spring day with a breeze just teasing the limbs of the cherry blossoms, but refusing to satisfy the cooling needs of the sun-exposed skin of anyone that dared to step outside. Yesterday's zip-up no longer needed during the now blazing heat. Weather in Japan always seemed to shape the daily mood of the town. Today felt calm. Today would be a good day.
It was only a ten-minute walk to the store, but Izuku would always walk a little slower around the trees, watching the life change with the season. He was greeted with the smiles of neighbors and family friends as he passed their houses, parked cars, and street markets.
"Oi, oi. How's your mother, boy?" An elderly man inquired, walking out of the store as Izuku was about to walk in.
"Fine! I'm going to get some fresh food for us now." He smiled shyly and waved as he entered the store, casually avoiding further conversation.
Milk and a few vegetables were the only things on the shopping list for him to buy, but when Izuku turned his head to a display center at the end of the aisle, his jaw dropped. There on the polished wood of the display table sat a limited edition All Might action figure. Everything previously in his hands had left in favor of the market floor, and Izuku, wide-eyed and circling the table, had begun his infamous murmuring.
"This can't be real. There's only a hundred of these in Japan! I didn't know they sold figurines here. How did they get this here? Why hasn't anyone bought it yet? How much is it-" Just as the green-haired boy reached out to check the price of the limited All Might, his actions were hindered by a very aggressive snatching of the figurine.
"Don't even think about it, Deku."
That name. Izuku hadn't heard it in years. Several vivid memories flashed by his mind in an instant. And that voice. It could only belong to-
Izuku looked up hesitantly, and when he did he flinched and stepped back at least three feet.
"K-Kacchan!"
"This is mine. Don't dirty it with your germy fingerprints." Katsuki's eyes were squinted, daring the other to make a move or voice protest. But, as you know, desperate times call for desperate measures.
"B-but you haven't bought it yet." Izuku pointed out. "I was going to-"
"Yeah? So what? You tryin'a fight me for it?" Katsuki's quirk had come alive, and the all-too-familiar sparks from his palm were reflecting in Izuku's eyes.
"No, I-" Izuku took a short breath and collected himself. He wasn't a child anymore. He could face a bully. He could stand up for himself. For All Might. "I was here first." There first came an attempt to grab the figurine from the blonde's grip, then the dodge and counter. Izuku was shoved away by the shoulder and almost stumbled into another customer. He couldn't do this here.
"Hoh? You've found some nerve, Deku." The sparks grew larger, and with it, the crowd in the store halted their daily shopping to watch the developing showdown.
"Kacchan, stop. We can't. Not here."
"Who cares about a bunch of extras? This place is a dump anyway. This is all I'm here for, and you're not gonna be in my way when I get it." The blonde took a step back but was halted when he felt a strange tug on the figurine. "Huh?" Katsuki looked down at two sets of large eyes twinkling in awe as their hands were stretched out to grab All Might.
"Oi, get off, gremlins! This one's mine!" Katsuki's voice had softened in a subtle way but kept his grip on the store's precious item.
"Look, ma! It's All Might! Can we have it?" The two boys were so excited, one of them bouncing on his feet while they waited for their mother to turn the corner.
