Saturday morning, 7 a.m. Sara had just woken up and is now going downstairs to get breakfast. Mr. Clark was making coffee and Mrs. Clark was making toast with eggs and bacon. "Look who just got up. Morning princess" said Mr. Clark. "Morning", said Sara still a little groggy as she walked over to the dinner table. As Mrs. Clark brought over the food as she greeted her daughter. "Did you get your things together for the beach?" asked Mr. Clark "Yup, I'm all packed up and ready to go." said Sara. Suddenly Mr. Clark's facial expression went from happy to serious. "Now honey when your friends come I don't want..." he started to speak when Sara cut him off. "Dad! I know already what your gonna say". He looked at her and asked, "What was I going to say?" he asked. Sara looked at him and replied, "You were gonna say that 'when you get there I want you to have fun but just be careful.' I know." Mr. Clark went back to eating his breakfast and said, "Well them I guess I have nothing else to say."
It was a bright sunny day at the beach. When they pulled up to the parking lot of the beach the scene was just breathtaking. The sea was glistening from the sunlight in the clear blue sky. When Sara breathed in some air she smelled the food in the restaurant being made. At the beach she had so much fun, she went swimming for a little bit then went for a walk and even to the beach side bar. But most of the time she was tanning under the sun with the other girls. But all the fun had to end at some point so the girls started packing up. When everything was almost done packing, Sara remembered that she had left her blanket on the beach, so she ran to go get it. As she was shaking all the sand off it, one corner of the blanket hit her arm and it had felt like a jellyfish had just stung her. But she ignored the feeling. The next day she realized she got the sunburn probably because she forgot to take sunscreen. About a month later it had healed up except for one spot on her arm. Her Parents took her to the Hospital not to expecting the worst. After the doctors took all the necessary tests, the results came in the next week.
The Clark's had been sitting in the waiting room, thinking about the reports just given. Whether it was something good, or something bad. They hoped that it wasn't something horrible. As time passed by and the doctors kept them waiting, they were losing patience and wanted to know more. Finally, after a long waiting for the doctor they get to know what was in those reports. But, what they hoped for didn't occur misfortunately.
Dr. Robinson walked into the room that Sara and her parents were in. "So the results just came in, and by the looks of it I'm sorry to say that, she has skin cancer", said. "Well what's the bad news?" asked Mr. Clark. "Well, the bad news is that the treatments for this will cost a lot of money. "So what's the good news?" asked Mrs. Clark. "The good news is that we caught it in time so it's not that serious. If we caught it a little later then that would have been worse." Explained Dr. Robinson. The whole time Sara was quiet once she heard that she had cancer, trying to process such reality. All she could think about is what would happen, what would happen to her, what will everyone say or think. She just sat there staring into space. There was a tsunami of thoughts and questions that flooded her mind. She was in complete and utter shock. While Sara was drowning in her own world, her parents were discussing information on the different kinds of treatments. "There are several forms of treatments. The first and obvious form being surgery, the second kind is immunotherapy which helps the body's immune system find and attack cancer cells. The third form is the obvious chemotherapy. Then the last form is radiation therapy. Here's a brochure to help explain it furthermore. But for now go home and have her relax and give her time to take in everything.
When they got home Sara was still in shock. She got out the car and didn't talk to her parents; she went straight to her room and shut the door without locking it. She didn't come out of her room. She was there for an hour and still didn't come out. "I'll go call Niall, he's the only one that she'll talk to" decided Mrs. Clark. As soon as Niall hears what happened he hung up without saying a word and darted to the Clark's house to be right beside Sara. 'Knock, knock, knock' "Where is she?" he said with a worried tone in his voice. Mrs. Clark gave him a surprised look and said "she's in her room, she hasn't said a word once she found out and I was hoping that you could to go up and comfort her."
'Knock, knock, knock' "Sara, can I come in", he said as he opened the door. He peeped his head through the side of the door, and saw Sara lying in bed with her facing the door. He walked in and sat next to her on the bed and, put a hand on her shoulder. Once he touched her, it was like she had broke out of a trans. She stood up so they were sitting side-by-side, and looked at her pillow and saw a large amount of hair lying on the pillow, that's when she let all the tears out. Niall held her close and let her cry on his shoulder. "Its okay, let it all out" he said while rubbing her shoulder. "It'll be all right. Remember what I told you on the first day of school?" he told her. "Yeah. But how are you going to help me through this one?" she replied as she lifted her head up to look at him. "I will go to every single one of your therapy sessions until you get cured" he told her. "But what if I don't get cured? What if I-" she asked but was cut off by him."Don't you dare finish that question! You will be cured." He said because he knew what she was going to say. Sara smiled for the first time that day, knowing that what he said would be true since he's been there for her whenever she needed him.
They both sat there looking deeply into each other's eyes, feeling a connection between each other. Then all of a sudden they started to inch closer and closer, until their lips met to a soft kiss which led to another kiss, but this one being more passionate. That's when they realized their feelings for each other. They both sat there in each other's embrace looking outside the window. As they were looking out the window Mrs. Clark came up and peeped her head through the door and asked, "Is everything alright in here, may I come in?" They both turned around and Niall said, "Everything's fine in here you can come in." As she walked in, she closed the door behind her and sat on the window seat in front of them. "How are you feeling?" she asked Sara. "I'm alright" she replied
Sara looked over at Niall and gave him a smile and then looked down to their hands and smiled to herself. Mrs. Clark looked at them strangely for a minute then realized what just happened. A grin had formed on her lips knowing, that she now had someone who knows her very well to look after her other than them.
Niall and Sara had been going to chemotherapy for the next 2 years until one day she got the news that she wouldn't have to got to chemotherapy any more. That was one of the best days of her life because; she knew that she wouldn't have to think about the negative thing that came with having cancer. She can now move on and think about the future. She can now think about prom and graduating. She can now share her story to other cancer patients, and tell them not to give up on hope. She can tell them to look toward the future and enjoy the rollercoaster of life, because you may never know what happens. April 18th, 2014 would be the day she survived cancer.
