I try to find a place to escape the terror behind me. I see a small fork in the tree about ten yards ahead. I gage how long it would take me to scramble up the trunk and take off towards the tree. The trunk is thicker than I thought and I don't know if I can jump down and keep running. I hide behind it hoping the beast runs past. But he doesn't. He stops right in front of me and I hold my breath. He sniffs the air and turns around. I pray he's color blind. But he's not. He slowly trots over. He gives me one good look, opens his mouth, and I bolt. I'm tempted to look back and see if he is following but I just push myself to go faster.
