Frozen.
Everything felt numb.
Everything became a soft murmur.
The loud yelling of my parents as they usher everyone we know out of the living-room and the house as one of my dads friends take over.
"Hey sweetheart everything is going to be ok. Ok? I promise I'm not going to let anything happen to you." My dad's friend Grayson cooed to Paris.
My parents rushed around the house grabbing everything in possible sight and shoving it all into bags.
My aunt Denise and uncle Gabe cleaned like mad men as if cleaning was the solution to what was happening.
My cousins looked rapidly around the room helping each other find hats, shoes, scarves, and jackets.
My dads boss Mr. Hollingsworth talked rather quickly on the phone some words not sounding like words at all, but just one continuous sound.
Then there was little ole me.
I remained frozen in my spot unsure about what to do. Everyone moved around the room with purpose, because if you weren't moving with purpose it seemed like you shouldn't move at all. So there I stood...
No. Purpose.
Do I try to help my sister? Should I tell them what I know? Will I get in trouble? Questions ran wildly in my head. It had appeared that I had zoned out as I was being strapped in a booster seat with a door slammed in my face.
I felt helpless as I saw my sister and mom being hailed away in a car and me just watching from the other side of the window pane.
I felt the car engine start as we zoomed out of the drive-way and far away from our home something I feel like I won't be saying much often anymore.
We arrived in record breaking time to the large brick building that read in big bold white letters "Mercy." Everyone was out of their cars as daddy hoisted Paris up and goes rushing into the ER with mommy not too far behind.
Aunt Denise unbuckled me with a reassuring smile. "Everything is going to be ok." She said with optimism. She picked me up and we quickly made our way into the hospital.
Upon entering I hear my very angry dad, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO WAIT! CAN'T YOU SEE MY DAUGHTER IS IN PAIN!"
"My apologies sir of course I can see; however, the majority of our rooms are full at the moment there has been an incident. Now if you could please just have a seat over there and fill this paperwork out and we'll try to get to you in a timely manner." The receptionist says very calmly with sympathy.
"SHE IS IN IMMENSE PAIN AND YOU WANT ME TO WAIT?! WAIT FOR WHAT BLOOD TO BE ON THE GROUND!"
Paris visibly whimpers into our dad's chest as my mom tries to calm him.
"Honey lets please just go sit down I'm sure they know what they're doing." Mom says wrapping her arm around my dad's waist.
"NO..."
My aunt Denise swiftly carries me to the waiting room chairs to somewhat shield me from the rest of the confrontation. As we sit I notice a man clutching his arm with a cloth in-between his teeth and veins popping in his forehead.
"Good luck with getting in we have been here for an hour and a half and we still haven't been seen." A man with a bloody nose sitting next to the cloth guy says with amusement laced in his voice at my father's efforts. "See man you should just let me pop it back into place and we'll throw some cheap vegetables on it and call it a night eh?" His friend begins to squeal in pure terror while fiercely shaking his head no.
After awhile my father had given up and sat clutching Paris to his chest whispering sweet nothings in her ear. I hate to admit it, but I was more then just a tad bit jealous. She was getting the love of our perfect family for the last time.
Everything had begun to die down, Mr. Hollingsworth went home giving his condolences, next to follow was uncle Gabe and my cousins, and everyone left was almost knocked out sleep.
Almost.
As my mind finally started to slow down from the previous chaos that's when it was heard.
The loudest gasp as if someone had been suffocating awakening everyone in the waiting room.
"Paris it's ok honey breathe... Paris. Paris! You have to breathe!.. PARIS PARIS PLEASE!..."
My father yelled as Paris' body violently started to shake as her face turned a bright shade of purple.
"Sir I need you to move." A doctor comes rushing out of the back area gently pushing my father out of the way.
"Code blue! Blue team move in!" The intercom sounded over the radio and suddenly the hospital was back to being full of life.
Nurses moved us out of the area as they surrounded her body and brought out a machine.
"No need!" The doctor shouts as he appears to stab my sister in the throat and a loud gasp rings through the air, "We have to move her!" Soon after my sister was lying on a bed being hauled away. My father and mother in the doorway being blocked by nurses. As those short few moments seemed like eternity.
My stomach whirled, twisted, and clenched into knots as I waited in the waiting room. The anticipation in the room so thick molasses was no competition. My heart pounded in my ears as the feeling of guilt sunk deep into my thoughts.
