"Melody!" "Melody, it's time to wake up sweetie!" The cheerfully musical voice of my mother rings from downstairs and I hear her footsteps walk up to my room, first slowly and then more quickly until my doorknob is turned. I groan and pull the pillow over my head as she steps into my bedroom, pulling my covers off of me.
"Come on lazy bones, rise and shine!" "There's much to do today, and your father has something that he wants to dicuss with you early." "He says it's important." Finally waking up, I groggily open my eyes and look up at the face of my mother, Queen Ariel. The emeralds and diamonds glinted off of her gold tiara lit by the dim sunlight, and her long ruby red hair was elegantly pinned up in a high bun. The large bell-shaped skirt of her green gown spread out like a flower when she sat up on the edge of the bed. "Alright Mom, I'm up." I yawn, rubbing the sleep from my eyes which were blue like hers. People often told me that I looked a lot like my mom except for my more tanned complexion and midnight black hair which I got from my dad. Sometimes I wish I could just sleep all day, but when your parents are the king and queen and you're next in line for the throne, that's not really a luxury that you can afford.
Groaning, I push myself out of bed and my mom decides to help me get ready for the day. She starts combing the tangles out of my impossible hair, and I cringe whenever she hits a particularly difficult knot. Finally it was smooth enough but since it was way too wiry to put into any complex style I just opted for two pigtails braided together at the ends and tied with red ribbon. People would think it was sort of a kiddie hairstyle, but honestly I thought it made me feel quite grown up. After getting dressed in a red gown and Mom helping me with the laces I looked in the mirror. I was actually a little pleased with myself, since I was seventeen years old now I was starting to get a womanly figure although I'm nowhere near on Mom's level just yet but the slight curves that now graced my once rail-like body meant that I was making progress.
"Melody, let's get out of here." Mom said. I stood and and dusting off my skirts followed her. She and I had gotten much closer over the years and that I was very happy about. Ever since I was a baby all the way up to age twelve, I was a virtual prisoner in my palace and highly ignorant of the reason why. Until an evil sea witch tried to kidnap me, I didn;t know why my parents kept me from the sea that I loved so much and as a result our relationships were quite strained."Princess Melody!" Carlota, our maid greeted me. I smiled and waced back to her as Mom and I walked down the upper hall that led to the grand staircase. As welwalked, all I could hear were calls of "your highness" "princess" or "your majesty" as everyone greeted us. Finally after what seemed like forever we actually made it to the breakfast table. "Majesty, Princess Melosy." Grimsby, our father's steward and my godfather greeted us. "The king will see you in the breakfast hall now." Mom and I went into the dining hall where our meals were served, there at the ehad sat my father King Eric, and surprisingly my aunts and my grandfather Triton were there too. They were all in human form and I couldn't believe my eyes, if they were here then that meant that something had to be extremely important.
"Melody, as you know your birthday is coming up in a few weeks." "We have a lot to talk about so please sit down." Dad says as he gestures to a chair beside him. I talke a dep breath and sit down in it, waiting for him to speak.
