THE HOUSE WAS QUIET then again it had been all summer. The sounds of cicadas chirping outside and the hushed sobbing in the bedrooms sang the melody of the Gilbert home. Every one grieved in their separate ways.

Jenna Somers who now had three teenagers to look after sought to keep a strong face in front of the trio. She was now the matriarch of the family and grieved the death of her sister and brother-in-law in the comfort of her bedroom where she could suffocate her sorrows into her pillow. Her heart shattered for the teens and their loss.

Elena Gilbert the eldest of the teens kept to herself. Penning day in and day out in her journal and all but refusing to talk to anyone else about what she was feeling. A few nights she snaked her way into Alison's room where she wept in the comfort of her cousin's arms when the grief and guilt became too much until ultimately falling asleep.

Alison kept on the bravest face despite being utterly broken by the accident. She had gone through this once before and she knew the saying 'history repeats itself' was undeniably accurate. She wondered if she was the cause of everything bad happening, it certainly had a knack of following her. She tried to keep her thoughts from questioning what might happen to Jenna next.

Jeremy the youngest of the three had resorted to dissolving out of his reality. Getting high and guzzling bottles of alcohol out in the middle of the woods with the rejects of the authority of the haughty town.  Anything to paralyzed the thoughts in his head and ultimately being able to breathe in relaxation again.

A routine had formed in the household of short conversation and distant comfort between each other. But that system would soon shift as the school year was set to begin in a matter of days. The teens would go back to school and hope the pitying stares would have ceased with the summer season, and the random gestures of compassion from strangers would come to an end. And Jenna would go back to working on her thesis and trying to manage how to parent three teenagers.

In the meantime Jeremy was still up to his now normal habits, sitting out of the perch of the roof that he was able to access from his bedroom window. Music sounded from the radio perched on the window ceil as he laid back and admired the stars, a joint rested between his lips. He had enough on his mind, his parents' death, his feelings for Vicki Donovan-- a senior and his sisters' ex-boyfriends sister. It was a mess. And with his sophomore year starting he wasn't sure what was going to happen.

"Hey, can I get a hit of that?" A silvery voice asked causing him to look away from the sparkling night sky. A brunette head stuck her head out of her window beside Jeremy's room, a short smile on her face.
