Sam gazed wide-eyed at the new horse "Hey guys come look at this!" Moon and Moxie came over to stand beside him and see what he meant. Moon poked his head between the fence, due the irritating height at which the rails where set.
He turned his head back "Rose's sister Grace must have gotten a new horse! It looks young. I wonder if its nice! I heard a rumor that it came from a nasty place" He gazed at the wild thing that raced around the pen kicking and striking out, he decided she must be upset and worried.
Moxie went to the closest part of the pasture to the pen and called out to the horse"Hi! I'm Moxie, that's Samurai, and that's Moonie!" She tried to sound friendly and unthreatening to the new horse.
Phoenix gazed at the horses and whinnied unsurely. She tried to appear big, in case the horses were less than friendly. Many times she had met large horses with large egos to match. Beginning to notice the hay she had trampled in her frenzy, she edged towards it, feeling eyes on her. The girl's voice caught her attention "She seems to like Mox, and Moonie. Maybe they could go out together later."
* * * * *
After having seen the horse for a week and greeting it over the fence, Moxie was flattered to see the filly being lead towards her field. She kept her distance, as not to spook her.
Phoenix flared her nostrils, a sign that she was breathing deeply, as she was lead closer to the gate and pasture. She nickered to the black and white pony, she now knew as Moon Dog or Moonie. He whickered in reply and trotted up closer to the fence, causing Phoenix to prance and move faster. She was circled, until she calmed before finally entering.
The gate closed behind her and the lead was unclipped. She bolted towards the horses, but slowed and snorted, lifting her tail high in proof of her fine bloodlines. Her beautiful red mane shown in the sun as she stepped closer her her head high.
The horse acquainted themselves before descending to the lower field. "Do you wanna race?" Moonie asked. Phoenix nodded and darted across the field, she had asserted herself as leader (despite her age and size) and found the role mildy interesting. She heard the others follow and stopped "We can start here than loop back around the pasture twice." Each horse nodded and waited for Moonie to call the start.
"Ready, set, GO!!!" He called racing swiftly across the field, the others close behind. Samurai held his position of second, Moxie close behind, and Phoenix close behind. Sam knew Phoenix could beat him easily, her pony size and Arabian quickness allowed her a easy lead position if she so desired.
He sprung over a few bushes and the creek, but found a small stiffness from when he fell, ignoring it he tackled the down tree with Phoenix just behind him. She leveled out into a full run and nearly over took him. They matched each other stride for stride, until the end when he gave a final burst of speed and won.
Later that day, the girl Phoenix had come to know as Grace took her to the arena to on her skills, including ground-tying, modeling, standing and many others, and found herself amazed at her "Little Horse's" quickness of learning. 'Phe' was in the process of learning to lunge, but thought standing around and sniffing the dirt was much more interesting.
Grace was contemplating taking Phe to the upcoming show in Vermont along with Moxie, Moon, and Samurai in their slant load 4 horse trailer. They had been going to take Limit, a green ex-race horse, but she could still show Moxie or Moonie in riding classes, depending on Rose's mount choice. If anything at least Phe would get to see some sights and get exposed to the show scene, they might even do some in-hand classes, for fun of course "What would you think of that, girl? It's in a week."
