'They say it's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all,
that could be a load of shit, but i just need to tell you all,
Some mistakes get made, that's alright, that's okay,
You can think that you're in love when you're really just engaged'
She was in the betting den when it happened; looking for John to help with the books and drink together. He was late, as usual, so she started tidying the place up because honestly it looked like a bomb site in there- boys honestly. So when the door opened she shouted back without turning around "honestly Johnny I don't know how you survived without me look at the mess in here" as she sighed.
He wasn't expecting to see her here, not yet at the very most. He hadn't heard from her in just over a year and when he did the letters were short, almost closed off. He knew he deserved it, Tommy was his best friend just like hers was John but family was stronger than friendship and he was the only family she had left. He knew it was wrong but he thought he was doing the right thing at the time - protecting her from the hurt Tommy's actions would ultimately cause her. He realized when she left that that was never his decision to make and his betrayal had hurt her so deeply that she no longer trusted (not just him) but anyone. But there she was right there in front of him, yet to notice that it wasn't John who had entered and was picking up empty whiskey glasses. They may have both left but now they were both back, in the same room, at the same time and he took it as a sign.
After not receiving a sarcastic reply from John as she expected she turned around to see what was keeping him. The glasses fell from her hand at the same time that her heart lodged itself in her throat. The world stopped for just a second before she walked over to him silently(never breaking eye contact) drew her right hand back and slapped him across the face, which whipped to the side, before returning back to its previous position. Nothing moved. Silence. The door opened.
And then she left.
She had found John with his brothers in the Garrison and upon arrival didn't have to utter a word to him as he saw her go behind the bar grab a bottle of Irish whiskey and two glasses, make eye contact with him and walk over to the door.
He got up following her, all eyes on them "we have glasses Elle" he said,
"Not anymore!" she yelled back on the way out the door, he put on his cap before giving Tommy a confused look and left after her. Tommy would be lying if he said it didn't hurt that she went straight to John now without even sparing him a glance, and even though he shouldn't he felt the cruel claws of envy scratch at his throat.
She was halfway up watery lane before John managed to catch up with Ella at the rapid pace she was walking.
"Elle! Elle would you slow down? whats up? " he said out of breathe trying to keep up with her stride.
