I sat in the windowsill, watching the rain beat against the window, watching the tree flex dramatically as the wind howled outside.
I let out a quiet sigh. The storm had occurred over night, and developed in intensity during the morning. Even hail dropped every once in a while. I wished it would go away, so we could continue looking for Dad.
"Lilly." Called Andrew from the kitchen.
My head whipped around, that wasn't my name. He seemed to realize as soon as it fell from his mouth.
'Lillian, lunch is ready.'
I sighed again, though I didn't want to eat, my stomach was starving for it.
Andrew laced up his shoes, "Hurry up we need to get going."
I finished my food, still silent.
"You need teh get ye better clothes, ye'll freeze." He said, grabbing a spare jacket for me.
And of course he was right. A harsh chill mixed with the wind, winter was on its way, all I had was a thin sweater and dress.
At the store, same things seen as before, I followed behind Andrew. If he couldn't see me he could hear me surely thanks to his big jacket.
"What about this?" He said, holding up a thick red sweater. It was very pretty.
It didn't take us long, going from rack to rack. A smile came to my sad expression. Andrew even got me a snack at the register.
Andrew was in the middle of paying when a man dressed in a suit made his way to leave.
"Andrew," I tugged his pants leg, "Andrew, look." Calling his name again.
'I'm almost don't paying-'
I threw caution to the air, and marched after to the well dressed man. That was my dad, for sure-- it had to be. Even the tie was the same color as well as his button-up shirt. The more I tried to catch up with him, I still couldn't reach him in time for the opening exit. I looked back at Andrew. He was still blissfully unaware.
I made a run for it, "Dad!" I called out.
My father stopped to reach in his pocket to show his receipt to a worker at the exit. I finally caught up to him.
"Dad?" I questioned, pulling at the man's sleeve ever so slightly.
And when he turned around...
🍀🍀🍀
"Sir, sir!" Yelped the cashier, "Your daughter just ran off!"
My eyes fell to my sides, looking all around in a panic. And that panic that came over me was something I had never felt before.
Lillian stood by a man, average height, with a loose cherry tie around his unbuttoned collar. She said something and the man left.
I rushed over, but I didn't know what to say. The way she hung her head, the defeat in her body language; the sadness in her eyes.
'I guess--' She wiped a stray tear with a sleeve, 'I guess that wasn't him.'
When we got back to the house, Lillian took a seat at the kitchen table nonchalantly.
She looked up at me, asking: "Andrew?"
'Yes?'
"If we can't find my dad, will you have to put me in a home?" She questioned, reiterating herself, "Like the homes where kids with no parents go- will I have to go there?"
Just like earlier, I didn't know what to say. A pain pricked my heart, the way Lillian looked at me with her big green eyes.
Lillian looked back to her half-eaten dinner, 'I'm full.'
The sudden change brought me back to the present.
She curled herself onto the couch, wrapping the throw blanket around herself.
"Andrew?" Lillian spoke up again.
'Yes?'
Lillian rolled over to face me, "Are you mad at me for running off."
'You scared me, but I'm not mad.'
"Why not?" Lillian kept on, the confusion on her face genuine.
'If I was you, I know I'd do the same thing. So, why would I be?'
Lillian gave a guilty look, "If daddy was you, he'd be so angry his face'll turn bright red."
It was the little things like that, that really stuck with me. Something was going on, but I was still left in the dark.
