Nimah would be lying through her teeth if she didn't admit that she was on the verge of throttling the next person who smiled at her with their overemotional condolences.
At first, it had been tolerable. A gracious nod, a polite smile, a muttered "Thank you," and she could move on. But after what felt like the hundredth person with their well-meaning but hollow sayings, she was officially done.
Her inner monologue oscillated between two questions: Should I get mad, or should I just nod and let it go?
Neither felt satisfying, but the thoughts churned in her mind like an endless storm. And when her mind inevitably wandered to the feeling of wind rushing through her hair as she soared on her broomstick, it was like an arrow to her chest.
Her stomach twisted with longing, frustration, and an ache she couldn't shake. She nearly banged her head against the nearest wall just to drown out the invasive thoughts. How is this still happening? Nimah had convinced herself she'd shoved the worst of it to the back of her mind, yet here it was, clawing its way forward.
Her anxiety intensified every time she tried to suppress it, the pressure mounting until she felt like she might implode. Flying had always been her escape, her sanctuary. Without it, finding a new way to unwind felt about as easy as solving a riddle with no answer.
