Prologue
“Will you be my girlfriend?”
Tears formed in the girl’s eyes as she watched the scene unfold before her. The boy she had had a crush on for the last three years was holding a bouquet of roses in front of her best friend. No one noticed her, hiding behind the bushes in the park, feeling the emptiness overtaking her heart.
“Yes!” her best friend exclaimed, throwing her arms around the boy’s neck.
She couldn’t watch anymore. Holding back the sobs, she started to walk away, wanting nothing more than to just go home and lay in bed. She was almost out of the park when she heard footsteps behind her, and turned around.
“You,” she spat vehemently.
Her so-called-best-friend shrugged. “I tried to make him like you, but it’s not my fault he chose me instead.”
“How could you do this to me?” she demanded. “You knew I liked him!”
“So what? He chose me,” repeated her ex-friend. “Don’t take this so hard, Chloe. Love is just a game. It’s not my fault I can play it better than you.”
“Will you be my girlfriend?” the boy in front of me asked. He was holding a bouquet of roses in front of me with adoration in his eyes as he waited for my answer.
I smiled sweetly at him. “Yes!” I exclaimed as I threw my arms around him in a fierce hug. I raised my eyes to the exact spot where I knew she’d be standing.
She was behind the bushes, watching me with her mouth hanging open. Her eyes shone of betrayal and her hands were clenched into fists. I locked my eyes with hers and gave her a smile.
She gasped and started coming towards me. “You bi–”
“Oh please, Miranda, let’s not call each other names,” I interrupted her as I let go of the boy I was hugging. He looked confusedly from me to Miranda, and I gave him another heartwarming smile which immediately brought his attention to me.
“Daniel, will you be a dear and get me a nice, hot latte?” I requested.
“Anything for you,” he replied, giving me a peck on the cheek before running out of the park.
Miranda watched Daniel’s retreat in shock. “What did you do to him?” she demanded.
I shrugged. “People change when they’re in love,” I answered.
“You – You –” Miranda kept clenching and unclenching her fists. I made a mental note to keep an eye on her hands in case she decided to punch me. “He loved me! How could you steal him from me?” she exclaimed.
I made a fake apologetic face at her, just like the one she had made a year ago. “Don’t take this so hard, Miranda. Love is just a game. It’s not my fault I can play it better than you,” I said, smirking at her.
Miranda looked at me speechlessly. Recognition passed over her eyes. Still, she pretended like she didn’t hear those words before. “What are you talking about?”
I tilted my head at her. “Really? You can’t remember?” I asked as I placed a hand on my hip and circled around her, indicating at the park around me. “You don’t remember this park? The very park where Daniel had first asked you to be his girlfriend?”
Her jaw clenched. “How could you do this to me, Chloe?” she asked, her voice almost breaking at the end. “Daniel and I were supposed to get married next year,” she stated.
I scoffed. “Oh, really? Then why did dearest Daniel just make me his girlfriend, hmm?”
Tears streamed down Miranda’s cheeks. “Daniel would never cheat on me. You did something to him!” she accused.
“And what exactly did I do?” I asked her tauntingly.
“I don’t know!” she exclaimed. “Just give him back, please, Chloe.”
I raised an eyebrow at her. “Give him back?” I repeated incredulously.
“Please,” she pleaded.
I took a deep breath and glanced around the park. It was midday, with clouds rolling lazily in the sky and the sun heating up the surroundings. It wasn’t too hot, just the perfect weather to have a nice picnic in the park…or take revenge on your former best friend.
“Chloe…please…”
I spotted Daniel coming towards us with a latte in his hands. I turned towards Miranda and threw her a smirk. “Let me think about it,” I said. “Thank you so much, sweetie,” I told Daniel when he came to my side and gave him a peck on the lips as I took my latte.
“Daniel, why are you doing this? Daniel?” Miranda asked, trying to latch herself onto Daniel’s arm but I steered him away from her.
“Hands off my boyfriend,” I told her.
“Is she bothering you, sweetheart?” Daniel asked me, making Miranda gasp.
I shook my head. “Nope. Not at all.”
With that, I walked away arm-in-arm with Daniel, leaving Miranda behind as she broke into loud sobs.
I didn't feel the slightest pang in my heart.
I had finally had my revenge.
Yet a part of me wondered why I still didn’t feel complete.
