The Trip

"So your'e coming with us?"

I glance up from my tomato soup to shoot the girl sitting across from me an exasperated look.

"All the way to London? For what? A picture in front of some ugly bridge and terrible food?"

Speaking of which... I glanced back down at the soup I had been stirring for the past twenty minutes. Parts of it had congealed onto the sides of the bowl, and it looked rather sad and cold now. I put the spoon down and leaned back in my chair.

"C'mooon Evie it will be fun. I want you to get to know Kevin better and you know you could use a little breather from art school."

I hated when she whined like that, it made me want to agree just so she'd stop.

The girl that was sitting across from me with her sparkling blonde hair and blinding smile, was my sister Tessa. She had been trying to convince me to go on this trip to London with her and her fiance for weeks now.

We were around the same age, Tessa only having a year up on me at twenty three. But I don't think you could find two people more opposite each other. Where I, the hopeless black sheep of the family was just finishing up my useless degree in art school, she had already graduated Harvard with a degree in business and a fiance. Although I really thought she was too young to get engaged but love is love right?

Kevin seemed like a nice enough guy, based off of the few mandatory family get togethers I had glimpsed him at. Law school, big house, fratt boy. In my opinion Tess could do better but I wasn't about to ruin her happiness.

Now, was I looking forward to spending three weeks holed up in London with her and her fiance's friends to live out my wildest fratt house dreams? No. No, not particularly.

"Uhm hello?" Tessa was snapping her long pink nails in my face. I blinked up at her.

"Uh what?"

She gave me a disapproving glare before piercing a piece of lettuce with her fork and bringing it to her mouth.

"I said that you never know, you might get to know some new people on this trip. Make some friends." She said around a mouthful of arugula.

"I don't need to meet anyone" I said, playing dumb. She always did this.

She gave a huge sigh, then leaned back in her chair scooting her half eaten caesar salad further away from her as if to make a point.

"You know Ev I always thought it was strange that we never talk about boys together, I mean we're sisters."

I gave a small shrug suddenly totally engrossed in examining my nearly untouched soup. I was not interested in having this conversation for the millionth time.

"Even in high school you always listened to my drama but whenever I asked about your love life it was like talking to a wall. I know we may not be super close as siblings but you know you can at least talk to me about these things right?" She reached across the table to grab my hand.

"No seriously Tess I just don't really feel like talking about it." I retracted my hand, and spotting a waiter, waved him over to ask for the bill.

"And it's totally fine if your gay."

My attention was yanked away from the waiter and back to her perfectly angelic sympathetic face. My confused expression must have been some kind of signal of confirmation for her because she started rambling about how my fashion sense suddenly made sense now and how art school does things to people.
