Chapter One

The wind howled like a wolf in the dead of night. Rain fell from the sky, pounding the Earth. Lightening bolted down the sky as if in a race and thunder cracked and boomed. Trees danced ferociously in the wind, leaves dashed past cars and houses. A paper blew wildly on a telephone pole, trying to escape the nail that bolted it to the wood. The pole creaked, then came crashing down to the ground and hit with a loud rumble that sounded like an explosion.

The paper was released from its prison and it dashed through the muggy, summer air. It raced down the streets and came to a two story house that had been painted a minty, sea-foam green. As the waves crashed behind it, the house itself looked pretty sturdy. The paper flew into an unintendedly open window. It was there that it laid to rest on the dark leather couch of Christina O’Malley.

Upstairs, the seventeen year old girl watched her iPhone. Her eyes dashed to the window and then back to her phone.

“Come on, answer!” She groaned as she flung herself on her bed, which was decorated with light blue sheets.

Then the phone buzzed, she quickly rushed it into her sight as she read the message quietly. Her eyes lit up and her shoulders lifted. As if written by script, there was the sound of a doorbell and the noise of two feet running down the steps. Christina opened the door and quickly invited her two friends inside.

“Did you get them?” Christina catechized, bouncing on her feet.

“Yep.” One of her friends said, holding up three tickets.

Christina took them in her hand and read them.

The water splatted over the carpet floor, Christina rushed over and shut the door. Her sleek, naturally straight beach blonde hair was wind-blown and her face had a stressed look that covered its naturally calm figure. She looked at her friends with a spark of hope, their plan was going into action.

For four years, the trio had studied and mastered the knowledge of many cryptids. They were especially interested in the Jersey Devil. They were planning on going to the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey to search for it.

“Chris, are you packed?” Angelina Bakmen, Christina’s closet friend, asked.

“Yes, I just need to get some last minute things together.” Christina confirmed.

“Well come on, I don’t want to be late.” Angelina pouted.

“Late for what? Our flights aren’t until morning.” Justin Swan asked.

“Yeah, but if we don’t get to the dinner reservation, we’ll starve.” Angelina retorted.

Christina rolled her eyes, she looked at her friend. Angelina wasn’t overweight, in fact she would be pretty skinny if not for all the exercise she did. Angelina had a fit figure, a body any teenage girl would want, and many envied her for it. As for her facial features, they showed no mercy. Her hair was light brown tinted with blonde streaks. Her eyes were dangerously green like the pine forests in mid-summer. She was basically a model, she had been offered many jobs as such but all of them had been turned down. She wanted to remain with her friends to search for the lost mysteries of the world.

“In this weather?” Christina taunted.

“You better not even try that with me Christina, the dinner is in our honor. We are the guests of honor, therefore, we are going.” Angelina demanded.
