It was a day away from Easter. You could tell from the way everyone was acting. The way their pace and speech quickened and they slurred their words. It would be a day of gluttonous happiness, regret, sorrow and of course, bitter smiles from the throwers living in luxury.
Dan watched as a tall, well-fed man strolled out of Louis Vuitton pushing a cart full of beige, red and black handbags, wallets, belts and who knows what else. If it was any other time of the year, he would have been bombarded with a swarm of filthy children begging for food. But they knew what was coming, the ultimate division between the rich and the poor.

It was finally Easter. The crowd was accumulating on a massive, dry oval. There was joy and anticipation in the air, with a hint of rapacity.
Food, bags, clothes, money, anything you could think of, were hurled aimlessly at the crowd. Every time an item landed, there'd be a forceful movement toward it. Punches were thrown and people barged their way through the crowd just to get to a piece of fruit. As the day went on, some were left lying on the ground with bruises or black eyes. Dan wanted to help but the crowd wouldn't stop for a couple of weaklings.
"This is how it's been before you, before me and generations before him." (p.g. 103)
A gleaming dagger was hurled through the dusty air. A few others stepped out of the way of the sharp tip, Dan flinched but was too late. He was quickly aware of the sharp, tearing pain on his left arm and winced, wiped the dust from his eyes and looked down at the dagger, gleaming through the dust. Dan looked down at the wound, expecting bright red blood and maybe even bone.
There was no blood. No veins or arteries. No bone. When he looked down at it, he saw wires. Red, blue and copper wires spilled out of his torn flesh. His breathing started to become ragged and he felt his heart skip a beat. Confusion and dizziness choked him. He felt squashed and couldn't see where he was going. Something in his head seemed to have loosened. And suddenly his brain stopped comprehending anything. He couldn't see anything through the tears welling up in his eyes, threatening to spill over and run down his cheeks. No one noticed, no one cared. All he knew were two things: 1. He had to get out and away from the malicious crowd. 2. He wasn't human.
