Regular Life short: Race to the finish
Grayson and Ioni are pitted against each other for a 100 meter dash. But while running, Ioni discovers something that she did not expect.
(This short is a reference to the Regular Show short Fun Run, but it has a different concept.)
Chapter 1: Are you ready for this?
"Welcome, everyone to the 1st annual 100 meter dash!" Slasher announced to the refugees and Guardians. They were in Leaguegend forest, ready to witness the race that was about to start.
"As you know, two of these fine students will show off their speed in a race to the finish," Slasher said to everyone. "May I represent you all, Ioni Addison and Grayson Stuart!"
Hearing their names, Ioni and Grayson came out of the bushes and to the start position. They heard their best friend's cheers from the other side. Ioni said nothing as she got out an MP3 player and placed headphones in her ears.
"You got this, Ioni!" Jeremy called out to his daughter. "Get that bear!" Emery called out to Grayson. Nikki, who was right next to Claire, scowled at Emery.
"You're going down, baby cakes!" Grayson sneered at Ioni. "I don't plan on losing today," Ioni said to Grayson. She searched her MP3 player for a song. "You think a song is going to help you?!" scoffed Grayson. "You're as pathetic as you are at home!"
As she scrolled down a little bit more, Ioni came across a song titled "I ran so far away," by A flock of seagulls. "This might work!" she said.
When the two heard the horn sound, Ioni and Grayson started running. "And they're off!" announced Slasher.
The song that Ioni selected earlier started playing in the background. "Where did the music come from?" asked Shelby. "Did Ioni select it or something?" asked Jeremy. As he said this, he found himself and Chad wearing 80s attire and instruments materialized in front of them and their friends.
"Is this an illusion or am I seeing things?!" Chad asked Jeremy. "It could be that song she's listening to," Jeremy said, holding a microphone. "I remember listening to that song."
"I have the sudden urge to play the drum," Paladin said, hitting the drum in front of him with sticks. "The keyboard is calling out to me," Shelby said, placing her claws on the keyboard.
"Give it up, Ioni!" Grayson hissed at Ioni. "You ain't got the moxie to beat me!" Ioni's eyes welled up in tears, but then she heard the song playing in her headphones and she looked behind her, seeing that her friends, including her parents; Jeremy and Claire in 80s apparel and performing the song that she was listening to.
It's how you would expect it to play out, with their voices altered of course. Jeremy is singing, Chad is on the keytar, Claire is on the electric guitar, Shelby is on the keyboard and Paladin and Brandy are playing the drums. Unfortunately, Nikki didn't get any instruments. But she didn't mind as she would rather watch Ioni in the race. The crowd of refugees and the Guardians were amazed at the performance happening and they all cheered for them and Ioni.
"Is that song helping Ioni?" Sparky asked Turquoise. "Whatever it is, it sure is a good jam," Dralen said, rocking out.
"What is up with that dumb song?!" Grayson asked Ioni. "You're running from something and you're certainly not running far away!" Ioni growled at Grayson and picked up speed. The two were nearing the finish line.
"It's neck and neck right now!" Slasher announced. "With this song performing, there's no telling who could win!" Ioni sprinted toward and passed the finish line, leaving Grayson who accidentally slipped on a rock in 2nd place.
"And Ioni takes the finish line!" Slasher announced. "But wait! She's still going on! What is she doing?!"
"Now she's running so far away!" barked Paladin. "We gotta go follow her!" Jeremy said, putting the microphone down. "You heard him!" Claire said to everyone. They stopped performing the song and followed Ioni's footprints.
Even though the song wasn't being performed anymore, it was still playing in the background. Ioni continued to run, feeling the fresh breeze in her fur. It felt good to actually run without it being a competition anymore. She had no idea that her friends were following her from a far off distance.
Ioni didn't stop or looked behind her. She continued running past the many trees of Leaguegend. She felt her heart racing and pumping fast. A flock of seagulls flew beside her and cheered for her. But when she reached the Lake of Dynasty, she immediately stopped running. The flock of seagulls flew high up into the sky. Ioni had no idea of how far she actually ran away from Leaguegend. Even though Ioni stopped running, she felt terribly exhausted. The song in the background ended.
The Lake of Dynasty crocodiles applaud her for running such a long distance at a young age. Their leader, Cotton was the most impressed. "That was a fine run you did there, bear," he said to Ioni. "It was?" asked Ioni. Cotton nodded his head. "It seems to me that you stretched out a little bit," he continued. "You exercising causes you to grow a little bit. But you just know that even though exercise is good, you mustn't push yourself too hard. You're still very young."
"I understand," Ioni said, gasping for air. But when she looked up, Cotton and the other crocodiles disappeared. "Huh? Where did they go?" Ioni thought to herself. She felt her chest start hurting and she began panting. She collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily.
"There she is!" Shelby called out to the band. "Poor thing," Claire said, carrying Nikki in her arms. "Ioni? Are you alright?" Claire asked her daughter. Ioni couldn't answer her, as she was breathing too heavily. She hadn't felt this much pain since the time she ran to Ostrichland, exhausted and injured by Grayson's teeth and claws.
Worried about his daughter, Jeremy gently picked up his daughter and held her to his chest. Feeling the sudden warmth of the ostrich, made Ioni breathe a sigh of relief. "I guess I ran too fast," sighed Ioni. "You sure did," Jeremy said, wrapping a medallion around Ioni's neck. "I won?" she asked, weakly.
"You ran so fast that you forgot to claim your award," said Shelby. "And that song, it's so good." "I didn't mean to run so far away," Ioni said, with tears in her eyes. "Don't get mad at me!" She started to push away until she felt Jeremy's feathered wing pull her back against his chest. "Relax, Ioni, you're fine," Jeremy said, gently rubbing Ioni's back. "Why would I be mad at you?" "Because I ran away and parents get upset when kids run away," sobbed Ioni. "That may be true," said Jeremy. "But maybe you ran a little bit more to get exercise." "And apparently I stretched out, according to Cotton," sniffed Ioni.
"So, you grew an inch, so what?" asked Claire. "Maybe she's maturing at a slow pace," suggested Brandy. "Maybe," Ioni said, yawning. "But I think it's best for me to sleep. All that running sure made me tired." "My little champion deserves rest," Jeremy said, still carrying his daughter. "Dream on, Ioni."
