Chapter Seven | The Scherer's
Sizzling was heard from the frypan when I had flipped the pancake over the next morning.
I had woken up really early to make some pancakes for these guys. Corey's mother, Christy helped me get the ingredients before she left the house to go to work, she says she completely trusts me not to burn down her house.
I was grateful that Christy allowed me to stay the night, even though I'm completely a stranger to her, but she told me "any friend of Corey's is my friend too." Now that's the mother I aspire to be.
The others haven't woke up yet. Corey has three siblings, Cenzey, Courtney, and Cambrey. They have a father called Allan who was at work with Christy too.
I know, the whole "C" with their names crept me out at first, but honestly I find it rather cool now.
I've made roughly 15 pancakes now and I knew one of them would be waking up right now.
"Hmm! Is that pancakes I smell?" It was Cambery who had come in himself and I turned slightly to smile at him.
"Morning, Cam."
"Morning, Char." Cambery greets back politely. "Not that I'm complaining, but why are you making pancakes?"
I shrugged. "I thought y'all would want something special to me wake up to." Plus, I wanted to cook in their flash kitchen. Did I mention how nice Corey's house is? He has such a big house. "And kind of a thanks for letting me stay the night gift."
"That smells delicious." Cambery tells me as he watches me flip over the pancakes. "Want a taste tester?"
I giggle softly. "Sure, only one though."
"You're the best!" Cambery giggle and takes a bite of one of the really good pancakes I made. He moans in satisfaction and basically eats the rest of it. "Can we hire you to make pancakes every morning?"
"I'll do it for free." I joke with him, he lets out a laugh.
"Let me know if you need help setting the table, I'll be in the lounge!" Cambery called as he had already left the kitchen and I beamed.
Man, Cambery is such a nice kid. He was definitely brought up well.
"Good morning." A deep voice had cut me out of my thought and I looked up, meeting my gaze with some ocean blue eyes. "Are you making pancakes?"
"Yup." I mouth popped and turned around to the frypan. I take the pancakes off and put them onto the plate that was filling up rather fast. I poured some more pancake mix into the frypan and listened to it sizzle. I turned back around. "Christy trusted me not to burn down her house."
Colby had come walked right over to me, a small smile plastered on his face. "I didn't know you can cook."
"It's a basic thing to do, Colbs." I tell him, turning around to the frypan slightly to check up on the pancakes. They're bubbling which is a good sign that they're almost done. "Anyone can cook pancakes."
Colby's eyes dart down to the stack of pancakes freshly cooked. "Do you want a taste tester?"
I shake my head and smiled. "Nope, Cam already took that job upon himself."
Colby groaned slightly. "Damn. I'm really hungry."
I chuckled and turned back to my pancakes. They needed to be flip. I was about to flip the pancake until I felt Colby move directly behind me and he had wrapped his hand gently around my hand on the spatular. He helped me flip it and I watched the pancake mix turn into a beautiful gold pancake on one side.
"Thanks," I breath, kind of confused what had just happened. Colby lets go and let's some distance between us and I turned around.
"Is that pancakes I smell?" I heard Katrina asks excitedly and she runs into the kitchen with Devyn seconds behind her. "Oh, my Gosh, I love you!"
I laughed shyly. "I love you too?"
"When are they ready?" Katrina asks, her eyes eyeing the stack of pancakes.
"In five minutes." I made up a time, because I'm not sure when I'm actually finished. But I'd say in about five minutes if everyone's waking up now.
"Is everyone up?"
Katrina giggles. "Everyone expect Jake. But, ya know how is, he sleeps in until noon. Well, they all do."
"I feel like I'm being ignored." Colby complained softly. "Charlie pay attention to me."
I rolled my eyes. "Stop being a baby, Brock." I turned back to my pancakes and flipped them. I looked at the girls. "Do me and favour and wake up Jake?"
Katrina looked worried for a moment. "I don't think we should mess with his sleep."
"Don't worry, I got you," Devyn tells her before turning in her heel. "Corey!"
A giggle left my lips and so did Katrina's, she quickly followed Devyn out.
I quietly giggled and turned back to my pancakes. It was only for a split second, but I felt somewhat content dispute the situation I'm in.
Colby walked back over to me and leans beside me on the counter, watching me flip a few pancakes. He seemed rather happy as well. I gave him a shy smile.
Over the next 15 minutes, everyone was eating and talking around the Scherer's table. I only had one pancake as I wasn't really hungry. I made eye contact with Katrina and she gave me a smile before leaving her boyfriend and sitting next to me.
We are now in the lounge, everyone just hanging out, whether it be making Instagram stories, Snapchat stories or even just simply talking and making each other laugh.
"Hey." Katrina tells me a soft tone. "You know it is gonna work out with your Mum, right?"
I let out a small sigh. "Yeah, I know." I frowned. "I think. It's just... My family is a little dysfunctional and I can't lose my Mum."
"What family isn't a little dysfunctional?" Katrina asks, smiling.
"You guys seem so happy..." I looked at everyone who was minding their own business. "I've never had a big friend group before, I feel like I don't belong."
"Are you kidding?" Devyn walked over to us, holding a glass of orange juice and she took a seat next to me. "You do belong here. No ones been able to shut up about you since you've joined. All good things, of course."
A small blush fell on my cheeks. I'm not used to being talked about so positively before. "Really?" I mumbled. "You guys-" I got cut off by my own phone and I take it out of my pocket curiously, I looked at the ID. "Tom." I mumbled. "I'll be right back."
I went to the bathroom and then called him back as I had just missed him. "Char! Come to the hospital, quick!"
My eyes widen and I stare back at myself in the mirror. "What's wrong? Did something happen to Mum?"
"Yes, no, er." Tom stutters. "She's awake, Charlotte. She's awake."
