Soo Yun took a cab to his apartment with the things his mom had bought. He was in a good mood, family dinner had gone extremely well. He and the director didn't have any altercations. He smiled softly. Though the wind blew and he bumped into people in the hallway he paid them no mind. He passed the doorman, waving at him, past the mailboxes and into the elevator.
He hummed to the tacky elevator music as he waited to get to his floor. As he got close to the twenty second floor he stiffened. Through the closed elevator door came raised voices, each to and from, the verbal fight getting more shrill, more severe. The doors opened and he crept forward, clutching his grocery bags closer to his chest.
Kris was standing at the hallway close to his door, two men towering over him. Their shoulders were square, strong. They heard the elevator door open and they let go of Kris, pushing him against the door.
Soo Yun took slow steps towards his door, the huge men watching his every move.
"Is there a problem? He asked Kris in a soft voice that shocked even himself.
"Mind your business!" One of the man spat at him. He wiped off the droplets of spit that had landed on his face. Kris still had that smug look on his face and his stupid grin but above his right eye was a huge bruise that was bleeding into his eye.
The same place his crazy girlfriend smacked him with the heel. Soo Yun thought. He pulled out his phone and walked toward the three men.
"This is my business," he said, waving his phone in their faces. "Leave or I call the cops."
One of the men snickered and poked at Soo Yun's chest. "Call them shorty. He owes us money. We're here legally."
Soo Yun looked at Kris, the bruise that had begun as a purple stain above his eyebrows had sunk into the socket itself and had the appearance of a black eye. He was taking shallow rapid breaths and clutching at his abdomen as if something was broken.
"How much does he owe?" Soo Yun knew he shouldn't meddle but he just couldn't walk away.
"Why? you want to pay us?" The man who was holding Kris by the collar chuckled.
Soo Yun grabbed his hand and attempted to pull it from Kris. "Yes," he said.
The three men all stared at him with their mouths wide open, Kris placed his hand on his, "Doctor precious don't...," He coughed and spat out blood, coloring his white teeth.
Soo Yun clenched his fists.
Who beats up a kid this bad?
"I'll pay you, however much it is so let him go."
One of the men punched Kris in the stomach before tossing him to the ground and turning to Soo Yun. "A hundred thousand." He said.
Soo Yun looked at the pile on the floor that was Kris, "the number." He said to the man.
He took the number they gave him and transferred a hundred thousand into their account. He waited for them to confirm that they had received it before turning to his door and keying in the pin. He pulled the door open and walked in. He heard the men chuckle, "Don't let us come here again," they said to Kris, he heard the elevator doors opening and closing.
He placed the groceries on the counter and rushed back to the hallway.
"I thought you abandoned me." Kris laughed struggling to get on his feet.
Soo Yun rushed to him and grabbed his arm, placing it around his shoulders. He supported him to his apartment and made sure to lock the door before walking the wounded Kris to his couch. He went into his kitchen cabinet and pulled out a medical kit, all the while not saying a word.
