Meteor Wish

Sitting on the sofa, Tiana watched the meteor shower in the open television.

"Honey, aren't you gonna wish?" Her mom sat beside her on the sofa.

"Are you?"

Her mom smiled at her before patting her head and nodding.

"I wish, that my daughter finishes her study and I wish we can have our own home." Tiana sighed at her mom's wish, then she said her own, "I wish that.. every wish tonight would be granted."

"Tiana my baby. You know, one day you would actually get what you want and you will look back to this day when wished not for yourself but for other people." Tiana received a kiss on the top of her head.

"Thanks mom."

"Let's go to sleep, shall we?"

She nodded before turning off the television and going up to her room to sleep.

Nexr day came, Tiana is sitting on her desk in her usual classroom.

"Class, yesterday was the year's meteor shower. What did you wished?"

The students started to raise their hands and answer the question. Until everyone already answered except for Tiana.

"Tiana.. what did you wished yesterday?"

All heads snapped to Tiana's location. She never felt so nervous in her life, as if it's the last day of her life.

"I.." She looked around before clearing her throat, "I wished that every wish will be granted."

The whole class laughed at her and she felt so humiliated.

"The clever Tiana. Could have wished for yourself but choose to be nice and all."

"Class. I think what Tiana did is very good and an example of selflessness." That statement made Tiana smile and fluttered.

"Thank you sir."

As the class ends, Tiana was asked to be left behind.

"Tiana, you've always been my best student. And I want to tell you that what you shared earlier in the class made you earn respect from me. I'm pretty sure that, that meteor rain doesn't really have anything to do with people's wishes. What matters is the faith of the person wishing."

"Do you mean, you want me to wish for myself?"

Tiana's teacher chuckled and nodded at her.

"It depends on your decision."

"I should get going, I'll be late for my next class, thank you for the advice."

With that, Tiana left the room. Her day was as normal as it usually is. But as the day go on, she keeps on thinking about what her teacher told her about wishing. This little bother was noticed by her mother as she came home from school.

"You're early." Tiana walked towards her mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Then she sat beside her on the couch.

Soon, the television was turned off.

"What's wrong?" Tiana's mom looked and sounded concerned.

"Is it wrong not to wish for yourself?"

"No. Is this about yesterday, honey?"

"Kind of. But, I just thought, if I wished yesterday.. would it actually come true?" It was more like a rhetorical question than a real question.

"It depends, honey." Tiana turned to her mom when she heard her response, "Depends on what?"
