... The girl ran in the dark. She couldn't see where she was going, since there was no welcoming light from a torch and the moon was hidden. She could hear steps behind her coming closer. She wanted to cry, to berate herself for being a fool. But none of that could happen now, since she was running for her life.

She turned sharply down a corner and continued to run frantically. Suddenly, she tripped over something and fell. Her hands grazed the cold hard stones and she, feeling the pain, cried out. 

She couldn't stay down, she knew. The footsteps were approaching. He would find her and then it would be over.

With effort she got up and continued to run. Down another narrow alley, she came to a street. Finally light. But no one was around. No guards, no people. She continued to run, fear now clawing her insides. She turned into another dark alley and followed the narrow, twisting path in the dark.

Too late she realised her mistake. For the next turn she took was a dead end and she was trapped. 

She heard the footsteps closing in and come to a stop behind her. 'So then, this is it' she thought as she turned to face her pursuer. 

At that moment the moon appeared from behind a cloud. The knife shone brightly in the light, almost pure silver as it arched through the air. 

One thought passed fleetingly through her mind, of golden pearls and her best friend, as the knife closed in and she mumured "Goodbye". Then blond hair turned to red and blue eyes turned dull as she slumped to the alley floor, the moon the only witness of her life flowing away.
